Up to £10k is available from Creative Informatics to develop a specific area of creative practice or business using data or data-driven technologies. Closes 11 May.

Arts Council NI’s Small Grants Programme
Access grants between £500-£10k for professional arts organisations and community groups to support projects in any art form. Closes 31 March 2023.

European research and innovation funding programme is for research into cultural heritage and the creative industries, with a budget of €95.5 billion it runs until 2027.

B+B Creative R+D Release 'Our Story So Far'

Bristol + Bath Creative R+D (B+B R+D) has released Our Story So Far, a document detailing some of the incredible work that has emerged from the programme, an insight into the thinking behind the scheme, and how that has shifted over the last few years. The document provides insights into progress, process, and the complex ecosystem of B+B R+D and a look at what’s next.

🎬 OpenXR Films Highlight 7 Unique R&D Projects

XR Stories has produced a series of films about the projects funded and supported through the OpenXR funding call. The films showcase how XR Stories’ approach to R&D has helped creative companies in Yorkshire and the Humber to thrive. Watch the highlights film to discover how the projects use immersive techniques and tools to push the boundaries of digital storytelling.

£10k Connected Innovators Fund Available Now

Up to £10,000 of funding is available to develop a specific area of your creative practice or business using data or data-driven technologies. In partnership with Creative Edinburgh, Creative Informatics’ Connected Innovators programme supports emerging leaders in the creative industries to undertake research and development that will advance their own careers and/or business, as well as adding value to the wider creative community. Applications due by 11 May.

 11 May: No More Fast Fashion - The Role of Textiles in the Circular Economy

BFTT-funded SME, Elvis & Kresse are hosting an event to discuss material recycling in sustainable design and how they are contributing toward a circular economy. Brits throw away over 3kg of textile waste each year, making the UK the fourth-largest textile waste producer in Europe. Not only do these garments add to the growing landfill mounds across the country, but they also exacerbate the ongoing climate crisis. Combatting this issue is no mean feat, but these initiatives are supporting the fight against fast fashion.

 13 May: CI Lab 21 - Bringing Data to Life

Join the Creative Informatics team in person at Summerhall or online for their next CI Lab where they’ll be showcasing three fantastic performance based projects that are using data as the subject matter and creative driver for new work. CI Lab 21 will feature performances from three artist researchers who developed poetic responses to digital transactional cultures as part of Design Informatics' Telling Tales of Engagement exhibition. Free to attend.

 15 June: Future Fashion Factory Showcase

Join leading designers and experts from across the fashion and textiles industry for a day of panel discussions, in-depth conversations and digital exhibitions. Share in the successes of projects funded by Future Fashion Factory and explore how the industry can ensure a more sustainable future, asking key questions such as: What does the future hold for digital fashion? How can we support reshoring of fashion manufacturing to the UK? What do circular economies look like in practice?

 4 July: Experience the Culmination of the Clwstwr Programme @ ClwstwrVerse

On Monday 4 July, ClwstwrVerse will shine the spotlight on media innovations made in Wales and celebrate the projects, connections and advances made throughout the programme. Join Clwstwr at City Hall, Cardiff to learn more about - and experience - groundbreaking research and development in the screen and news sector. Expect a festival showcase of future-focused new products, services & experiences plus talks and debates on media innovation.

Funded Internships Scheme Open Now

The XR Stories Internship scheme is open to creative industry SMEs, in Yorkshire and the Humber, who are either already working in emerging technologies (including VP, AI, Mo-Cap, VR and AR) or aspiring to do so. This year, the focus is on addressing technical skills shortages. Students and graduates will work with businesses to deliver a creative project over a maximum period of 12 weeks. Applications close on 31 August 2022.

BFTT Project Manager Vacancy

University of the Arts London is looking for a Project Manager to significantly contribute to the delivery of the Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology Creative R&D Partnership. The successful candidate will have a successful track record of delivering complex, multimillion-pound R&D projects across academia and industry. Applications are due by 16 May.

Could you facilitate engagement for Future Fashion Factory's growing industry network? Recruiting now for a Communications and Digital Engagement Officer, to develop and maintain Future Fashion Factory's digital channels, organise and promote events, and share key messages through press releases, news stories and more. The National Gallery Launches First Immersive AR App

The National Gallery has launched "The Keeper of Paintings", a free mobile-based experience that uses AR technology to encourage children to explore the Gallery and learn about its paintings. Suitable for children aged 7-11 years, it aims to enable exploration and learning about some of the world’s most iconic national art and history collections, while being immersed in a rich, layered story where they are the hero solving challenges. The app was created by Arcade in partnership with The National Gallery, Royal Holloway University of London, StoryFutures, and Brunel University of London.

 14 & 21 June: Innovation Residency for Researchers R&D Bootcamp 

Join StoryFutures Academy for researcher-industry residency networking events on 14 and 21 June, addressing the gap between academic theory and industry practice of research in the creative immersive sector. Researchers and SMEs interested in embedding research practice to their immersive productions will have the opportunity to apply for a fully-funded residency of up to 10 weeks. Early Career Researchers will support creative immersive companies in their research and development of an innovative project aligned to areas of UKRI strategic importance and industry need. The residency programme will run between July - October 2022. Apply by 26 May.

Mind-Controlled VR Games Could Aid Stroke Rehabilitation

A virtual reality (VR) hand, controlled by the mind, could help stroke patients restore hand movement as part of VR assisted physiotherapy. Funded as part of UKRI’s Audience of the Future challenge, Cogitat is a startup founded last year to turn research by Imperial College London into products that help people. It explores medical and gaming applications of its core technology - a brain-computer interface that allows users to move in VR environments by mentally willing themselves to move rather than physically moving.

🎬 Show & Tell Series: Managing Multi-Partner Projects - Lost Origin Case Study

Audience of the Future demonstrator project, Lost Origin, was delivered by six partners during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. What did this cross-discipline team learn about managing such large projects? A lot. Watch this 'Show & Tell' session to hear John Cassy (Factory 42) and Dani Parr (Almeida Theatre) discuss topics such as overcoming conflicts and staying resilient, managing differing working languages and processes and the importance of establishing shared values amongst the consortium.

🎬 Show & Tell Series: Content Licensing in China

As part of the Audience of the Future Global Business Innovation Programme, Digital Catapult delivered a session on Content Licensing in China, with speakers from Tencent Cloud, the number one cloud service provider for games in China and VeerVR, a distribution company that operates both LBE XR cinemas and online XR platforms. Learn about the opportunities and challenges of entering the Chinese market from potential partners on the ground, plus discussion on the constantly evolving regulations, geo-political barriers, revenue models and audience preferences in China.

Submissions Open - LFF Expanded @ BFI London Film Festival

LFF Expanded is the BFI London Film Festival’s strand for Immersive Art and XR, and they are looking for innovative creators and teams from all over the globe working at the intersection of immersive storytelling, visual art and creative technology. The festival programme will showcase approximately 20 new works from international creators, with a spotlight on UK talent. BFI is interested in work which is formally bold and inventive; which shows us the world in new ways and work which probes and challenges our perceptions of urgent political, social and/or cultural themes.
