 19 January: Briefing - Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme South Korea

South Korea will invest $181.8 million this year in Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and devices to support the growth of the country's digital content industry. Innovate UK’s Global Business Innovation Programme will prepare a select group of innovators to access the market, meet South Korean counterparts and foster new partnerships during a 5 day tailored country visit. Current, Rising Wins 'Out-of-Home VR Entertainment of the Year' at 2021 VR Awards

As part of the Audience of the Future challenge, hyper-reality opera experience Current, Rising has won 'Out-of-Home VR Entertainment of the Year' at last month's VR Awards. The Royal Opera House collaborated with Figment Productions and Royal Holloway, University of London to develop the experience that took its audience into a magical universe, exploring ideas of isolation, connection, and collective reimagination. Testament to the team's hard work and creativity, this award recognised projects that have researched, implemented and carried out a truly outstanding, quality experience which has resulted in a high level of user satisfaction.

Netflix's 'A Boy Called Christmas' Uses Framestore VFX

CG characters created by Oscar, Emmy and BAFTA-winning visual effects studio Framestore have been used in the Studiocanal/Netflix release, A Boy Called Christmas. Supported by UKRI's Audience of the Future R&D funding, the team at Framestore worked with software developers WeightShift to add physics simulation techniques to the VFX animation, a process that was fully implemented as part of the workflow for the film. The technique was trialled on projects like Lady and the Tramp and His Dark Materials and shaves as much as 50% off the animation process

 Read more Wins Digital Catapult 'Responsible & Ethical Tech Pioneer' Award

As part of the 5G Futures research and development challenge through XR Stories, the platform (developed by Oxford-based creative technology company To Play For) was awarded the 'Responsible & Ethical Tech Pioneer' award at last month's Digital Catapult Awards, focusing on AI and machine learning. Such recognition is testament to the hard work in developing a platform that creates interactive virtual story worlds with believable virtual characters, to entertain and educate a new generation of audiences.

 12-13 January: Commercial Models in VR

XR Stories presents the first in a series of free business support events, Commercial Models in Virtual Reality, online from 12-13 January. In this workshop, open to SMEs based in Yorkshire and the Humber, Limina Immersive will guide participants on how to make ongoing revenue from creative immersive experiences in a commercially sustainable way.

 18 January: Future Tuesdays Presents Ulster Touring Opera AR R&D & Live Experience

Future Screens NI’s Future Tuesdays hosts Artistic Director of Ulster Touring Opera (UTO) Dafydd Hall Williams, presenting recent Augmented Reality R&D projects, the upcoming touring event and the future of UTO - the only dedicated cross-border opera company on the island of Ireland. UTO’s flagship live tour will visit seven venues in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in February 2022. In Spring 2022, UTO will launch its App on Apple Store housing the company’s augmented reality experiences developed with support from Future Screens NI.

Inclusive Innovations Open Call: Help Make Bristol + Bath a More Inclusive Space

Bristol + Bath Creative R+D invites organisations and collectives to explore inclusion best practice, focusing on how to make Bristol and Bath a more inclusive space to think, make, and do. Based around three key themes - Inclusive Spaces, Inclusive Governance and Inclusive Communities of Practice - the call is offering a £2,500 flat fee (apply by 21 Jan) for contributions that 'test' new ideas for inclusive practice or a £500 flat fee for contributions that 'reflect' on a previous experience.

Gravity the Studio Launches First NFT Fashion Collection

Using unique digital draping technology to place digital garments on to photos or avatars, Future Fashion Factory member, Gravity the Studio has launched its first digital fashion collection. The team design garments that only exist in a digital format using 3D design tools, then mint them as NFTs for sale over the brand’s website. Each design is sold as an NFT to be worn on Instagram or in the metaverse.

Global Agenda for the Cultural & Creative Industries 

A Global Agenda for the Cultural and Creative Industries is the PEC’s contribution to the UN's 2021 International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development. It was created in response to an invitation made by the UN General Assembly to the international community, and was written in partnership with the British Council. Launched at the World Conference on Creative Economy held in Dubai last month, the Global Agenda was written alongside the PEC International Council, and sets out 11 key actions for international creative industries and governments worldwide to support the growth of creative industries.

Future Fashion Factory Funds Twelve More Sustainable Fashion Innovation Projects

Twelve more collaborative R&D projects have been supported by Future Fashion Factory to support agile, profitable, sustainable fashion and textile manufacturing in the UK. The projects range from AI-driven production planning and digital fashion design tools to new technologies for UK fashion 'microfactories'. Across four funding calls, Future Fashion Factory has now secured more than £3 million investment in innovation for the sector.

This one-day conference on 2 February 2022 will explore interactive stories – their creators, fans and commentators. Interactive stories are experienced more every day.
