Showcasing Cutting-Edge R&D Projects

The Immersive Futures Lab showcase at BEYOND features creative projects that demonstrate innovative ideas, new types of content and novel uses of technologies drawn from many cutting-edge R&D work developed as part of the Audience of the Future and Creative Industries Clusters Programmes, together with Arts Council England funded projects. A selection of the projects will also be exhibiting in Belfast on 20-21 October, as part of the conference at the Titanic Experience.

Meet The Makers @ BEYOND 2021

As part of the BEYOND main conference (20-21 October), a series of Meet the Makers sessions provide a unique chance to find out more about the creatives and their R&D projects showcasing in the Immersive Futures Lab. Delve into the details of these fascinating projects, taking delegates through the ins and outs of the creative processes involved, plus the chance to ask questions and engage with the makers directly. Project XO Remote: Interactive Dance & Robotics Installation for Online Audiences. 

New Movement Collective's Project XO Remote, enables audiences to engage with the interactive experience by navigating a robotic exoskeleton suit and interacting with live performers from home. The participant experience is at the core of the concept, giving them a sense of play and responsibility.

Seeds of Life: A Meditative, Interactive Journey Through the Natural World

Seeds of Life is an immersive, interactive experience brought to you by National Film and TV School & StoryFutures Academy. Inspired by the way in which trees communicate underground through a vast fungal network, players begin in a space-like underworld and then travel along roots, creating life as they go.

Dragon Legends is an R&D prototype from Play Well for LifeThe AR card game is designed to support seriously ill young people in their transition from child to adult health services, aiming to help these people address anxieties and concerns around transition of care as they move into the adult world.

Curatours Museum of Plastic 2121: In the Future You’ll Find Plastic Only in Museums

Museum of Plastic from Cooperative Innovations is an imagined future museum, built to teach future generations about plastics. It tells the story of how activism started in 2021 led to the positive change that resulted in us cleaning up our oceans and forever changing our relationship with plastic.

UAL Launches Fashion, Textiles & Technology Institute

Building on the Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology Creative R&D Partnership, University of the Arts London announces the Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute (FTTI), directed by Professor Jane Harris. The new institute is the first of its kind to incorporate design, STEM, cultural anthropology and business practices. "The FTTI is uniquely placed to provide industry with specialist cross-sectoral academic and business support, and most importantly the agency to lead fashion, textiles and technology innovation through R&D – helping to achieve economic recovery and growth using more sustainable methods", says Professor Harris.

£2.8m Awarded to British Textile & Fashion SMEs for Sustainable Innovation

Following an initial £1.2m  investment by the Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology (BFTT) R&D Programme Grants in 2020 to 10 of the UK's leading SMEs in the fashion and textiles industry, the BFTT is proud to announce a further  £1.1m in funding to 13 pioneering businesses that place sustainability, innovation and social purpose at the heart of their business model. This award brings the total investment by BFTT - including £500k collaborative research funding across three further BFTT projects - to approximately £2.8m across 35 SMEs, creating at least 20 new jobs.

Fashion Institute Tackles Global Environmental Challenges

Following the recent announcement from the University of Leeds on the Leeds Institute of Textiles and Colour (LITAC), headed by Future Fashion Factory, the UKRI has published an article welcoming the launch of the institute. Based at the University of Leeds, LITAC brings together existing areas of excellence, which since 2018, has helped businesses to develop sustainable processes and digital tools.

New Landscapes: Fashion, Textiles & Technology Catalyst R&D Grant Scheme

The Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute (FTTI, UAL) has partnered with the British Council to support new ideas for the future of sustainable fashion, textiles and related technology. A new grant scheme will provide five collaborative grants of up to £6k cash and up to £14k in-kind support (deadline 17 October). In response to global drivers, the programme encourages international cooperation to re-evaluate the industry’s relationship with climate change, the environment, and the need for radical transparency and social responsibility.

Apply Now: SIGN’s First Grants Scheme

SIGN’s First Grants Scheme is supporting academic researchers to develop projects which contribute to knowledge and understanding of the screen industries in Yorkshire and the Humber. Researchers who are based at higher education institutions in the UK are invited to apply for funding of up to £10,000 in order to support their research. The scheme will only support researchers who have not been a principal investigator or co-investigator already on a grant worth more than £5,000. Deadline 15 November.

£10K Support Available Via Trailblazer Fund 

The Trailblazer Fund from Bristol + Bath Creative R+D will support new or existing ideas related to creative technology from individuals, companies or collaborations that create impact in Bristol or Bath. You can apply for up to £10,000 and they will fund ideas that propel your creative and/or business practice forwards.

 12 Oct @ 12:00 - Future Foundation Presents: Everything You Need for Funding Success

The Future Foundations at Future Screens NI presents an exciting opportunity to learn from leading experts in the industry on everything you need for funding success. Hosted by Karishma Kusurkar, a designer, podcaster and founder of Belfast Design Week and Karishma's World, featuring Tom Fiddian, Head of AI & Data Economy Programmes at Innovate UK, and Thushara Sabreen, Innovation Lead for the Creative Industries at Innovate UK. AUDIENCE OF THE FUTURE NEWS

Industry Recognition for The Big Fix Up

It's been a week to celebrate for The Big Fix Up! The app, a collaboration between Fictioneers and Aardman, has been recognised as overall winner in Blooloop's Innovation Awards 2021 Digital category, as well as making the 2021 BIMA10. And to top it off, Fictioneers were also shortlisted in The Drum Awards for the Digital Industries, in the "Most Effective Use of VR and AR" category for their work on The Big Fix Up and Fix Up The City. Congratulations to all involved!
 

Storyfutures Academy Supports BFI Short Form Animation Fund 

Apply for the BFI Short Form Animation Fund, supporting growth in the UK animation sector. With awards of £30,000 to £120,000 available for successful projects, the fund, which is now in its second round, is seeking applications from a wide array of UK animators and will back projects which represent a significant advancement in their work, enable progression and open up new opportunities. The Fund is supported by National Lottery funding and operated by the BFI Film Fund. Deadline 25 October.

Job Interview Simulator Improves Performance In French Schools

Following the release of the Job Interview Simulator in May, Bodyswaps is deploying the technology at a number of educational institutions all over the world in order to assess learning performance and optimise deployment modalities. As part of their Partnership Programme, they have recently piloted the VR job interview training solution with students at HEC Paris, KEDGE and Passy Saint Honoré Sup.

'Laika' To Launch in VR at BFI LFF Expanded 

StoryFutures Academy has announced that their XR Commission ‘Laika’, directed by BAFTA and award-winning director Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna, Diego Maradona), will launch in immersive virtual reality at the BFI LFF Expanded on October 2021.

Based on the iconic graphic novel by Nick Abadzis and in partnership with BFI, StoryFutures AcademyFilm4 and Passion Pictures, ‘Laika’ brings to life the ground-breaking true story of earth’s first space traveller in immersive virtual reality and CG animation.

Support Fund for Edinburgh Based Freelancers

Edinburgh Performing Arts Development (EPAD) and Creative Edinburgh have announced a further iteration of the Practice Support Fund for freelance artists, technicians and creatives working in the arts and creative industries in Edinburgh. This fund is to support those whose ability to work was affected by Covid-19 restrictions before 31st March 2021. The fund will make grants of £1000 available to eligible freelance artists, technicians and creatives. Deadline 1 November.

The Burnt City: Punchdrunk To Stage Retelling Of The Fall Of Troy

Immersive theatre company Punchdrunk is to undertake its most ambitious project to date with a “future noir” retelling of the fall of Troy. The Burnt City will be staged at the company’s new headquarters at Woolwich Works, where some 600 theatregoers at a time will be given free rein to walk around the contrasting ancient worlds of Troy and Mycenae, each given a dystopian sci-fi spin, where they will encounter gods, monsters and perhaps a secret passageway or two over a three-hour evening.

Israel-Bavaria-UK Symposium: Horizon Europe

The international symposium on 19 October 2021 focusses on four specific topics from Cluster 2 “Culture, creativity and inclusive society” of the new EU Framework Programme “Horizon Europe” and invites British, Bavarian and Israeli stakeholders from the academy, research organisations, industry and other fields to explore new cooperation and network. The event is organised by experts from the Israel-Europe R&D Directorate (ISERD), the Scientific Coordination Office Bavaria-Israel of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) and UKRI.
