BEYOND Conference 2021 welcomed Sir Peter Bazalgette (non-executive Chair of ITV) to the stage last month, as the opening keynote. Watch the video of his speech at the conference in Belfast, and read in full here

Andrew Chitty, UKRI Challenge Director and Chair of Beyond, puts the speech in context: “Sir Peter Bazalgette’s 2017 report on the Creative Industries was instrumental in framing the Creative Industries as an R&D intensive sector. He also launched the Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded Creative Industries Clusters programme at our very first BEYOND Conference, so we were delighted to welcome him back to Beyond 4 in Belfast..."

£140k AHRC Fund for Researchers to Engage the Public in the BBC Centenary

2022 is the centenary of the BBC. To mark this major moment in the UK’s cultural calendar, AHRC, in partnership with the BBC and the National Science and Media Museum (NSMM), is inviting researchers to propose innovative, creative and collaborative public engagement activity that will encourage people to explore their connection to the BBC and the BBC’s role in the UK’s cultural life. Researchers will have the opportunity to express an interest in working with the BBC or NSMM on their projects.

European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) Culture & Creativity Call

A new call for proposals invites consortia of organisations and CCSI industry and sectoral leaders bringing together education, research and business to put forward their vision and strategy for EIT Culture & Creativity, the new Knowledge and Innovation Community that will drive the competitiveness and sustainable development of Europe’s CCSI. Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme

A virtual Town Hall meeting will take place online on 23 November for the fourth round of the Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Scheme. Attend if you are interested in accessing funding for collaborative doctoral research. This is a key funding opportunity for non HEIs who want to develop their investment in doctoral research.

AHRC Bursaries for Cultural Sector Leadership Training Courses

AHRC are offering are small number of bursaries for early career and senior academics to undertake a cultural sector leadership development short course. The course will develop academics’ leadership skills to contribute to the vitality of the cultural sector through their research and engagement activities. Bursaries cover fees, accommodation, and meals. An optional bursary to cover caring costs is also available. Applicants must be working within the AHRC’s subject remit. Closes 23 November.

£50k Virtual Healthy Neighbourhoods Challenge

InGAME and Nesta have announced a £50k prize for Scottish videogame designers who can successfully deploy game design and game technologies to develop a virtual environment that tests new approaches to increasing access to healthy food. Scottish gamemakers are invited to put forward applications to create the ‘Nesta Playbox’ - an innovation sandbox powered by a real-time 3D game engine. Closes 8 November.

Prox & Reverie to Fly to Los Angeles to Kickstart Partnership with Warner Bros

Doncaster based Multi-reality experience company Prox & Reverie fly to LA this month, to kickstart a new business partnership with Warner Bros. As part of the 5G Futures research and development challenge through XR Stories, Prox & Reverie partnered with Warner Bros to develop their 5G prototype, INTERCHANGE - a portable physical doorway system capable of connecting worlds, both real and fictional. Audiences can step into their favourite story or sports event. The trade mission highlights the cutting edge imagination and innovation in the Yorkshire region.

Applications for Resident Entrepreneurs Open Now

Creative Informatics is on the lookout for the next round of Resident Entrepreneurs. Applications are open for individuals and small teams working in or with the creative industries in Edinburgh and South East Scotland that would like to develop a new product or service using data. Successful applicants will receive funding up to £12k plus mentoring, access to resources and additional support from the Creative Informatics team. Closes 24 November.

Creative Futures: Call for Researchers 

Are you a researcher based at a UK higher education institution and seeking funding? XR Stories and SIGN are inviting expressions of interest from academic teams. The call will support their aim of producing new knowledge for academic and industry benefit that will future-proof the creative economy in Yorkshire and the Humber. To support the development of the screen industries in the region, four distinct areas of research will be commissioned. EOI due by by 25 November.

StoryFutures are seeking diverse UK-based storytellers to take part in a nationwide immersive project about their past, future and belonging. Successful applicants will receive £15k funding as part of this training and development programme that closes on 15 November 2021. An information webinar will take place on 9 November, outlining the scheme and a chance to ask questions.

 11 Nov: Clwstwr to Present at RTS Cymru Wales Sustainability Event

Clwstwr Producer Greg Mothersdale will appear on the RTS Cymru Wales panel - COP a Load of This - a seminar to discuss sustainable production on 11 November. Greg, who leads on environmental sustainability for the Clwstwr programme, will share work to date in the area and its vision for Wales to become a leader in moving towards green media production. He will be joined by Jo Finon of Sky Sports, Sally Mills of BBC Studios and Roger Williams of Joio TV and the online discussion will be hosted by Managing Director of Siml, Owen Williams.

 18 Nov: Hopeful Futures - Placing Collaboration at the Heart of Climate Work 

In this final event of the Bristol + Bath Creative R+D Hopeful Futures seminar series, the panel will look at how collaboration across sectors and scales can engage and transform communities in the wake of the climate emergency. What does it look like when scientists work with communities, artists, and creators to build the sustainable future we need?

Short Film 'Flying Under the Radar' Explores Late Diagnosis of Autism in Women

Belfast-based Creative Producer and Future Screens NI funding recipient, Jordan Whitefield has produced a short film ‘Flying Under the Radar’ that explores late diagnosis of autism in women. Written and directed by Solène Guichard, ‘Flying Under the Radar’ is a beautiful film that explores the experiences of 24 women who have been diagnosed with autism in adulthood. The film is currently screening at The LEVEL Centre, Derbyshire, the Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation until 17 December 2021.

Lost Origin Tests Limits of Next-Gen Immersive LBE

Factory 42 has teamed up with the multi award-winning Almeida Theatre and Sky to create Lost Origin: an immersive and interactive adventure that fuses technology and performance, theatre and audience interaction, and physical and digital worlds. Opening on 21 November, Lost Origin is a unique experience that mixes in-person theatrical performance with mixed reality technology, including Magic Leap, to create a compelling and highly shareable adventure in Hoxton Docks. With funding from UKRI and input from academics at the University of Exeter.

StoryFutures Academy Announces StoryTrails

StoryFutures Academy has announced that it will recruit and train the next generation of UK-based creative talent, with 50 roles to work on StoryTrails, part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, a ground-breaking UK-wide celebration of creativity in 2022. StoryTrails is a unique, immersive storytelling experience, where untold stories from the past are brought to life through the magic of the 3D internet using augmented and virtual reality to reanimate public spaces in towns and cities across the UK.

£7.5-£15k StoryTrails Partner Placements

StoryFutures Academy has announced eleven professional placements with leading-edge creative media companies in the UK, including Nexus Studios, ISO Design, Produce UK, Uplands Television, BFI, and StoryFutures Academy. Successful applicants will receive £7,500 - £15,000 to work on a placement of between 10 – 24 weeks. This opportunity will run from Jan - July 2022, with a negotiable, hybrid work pattern and location. An information webinar on 8 November will provide more details. Apply by 15 November.

Near-Life Emergency Responder Project Shortlisted for Award

Near-Life's VR training project developed in partnership with the WHO has been shortlisted at this year's Learning Technologies Award in November. The awards take place in London and are widely regarded as the top international event of their kind. Near-Life's VR project, aimed at supporting international, emergency responders has been shortlisted as 'Best Not-for-Profit or Public Sector Project', alongside major organisations such as the World Food Programme and the California's state government.

StoryFutures Academy Supports Industry First Virtual Production Course

As Virtual Production rapidly transforms the capabilities of the creative industries, the National Film & Television School (NFTS) in partnership with WarnerMedia, WarnerMedia Access and StoryFutures Academy, will lead the charge in training participants on the next frontier of filmmaking technology. The NFTS Virtual Production Certificate is a six-month blended learning course, designed to provide students with the core skills needed to build and progress a career in the thriving world of Virtual Production. Applications close on 27 November 2021 for the first course intake starting at the end of January 2022.
