October Issue #50.3

ILSConnect

Keeping us all connected with what's happening at the ILSC and around London!
We are going fast towards November, and that means at least one thing: our ILSC events are here! Already next week we have Ice Skating, and towards the end of the month we are looking forward to a Holiday event to get us in the right mood to enter December.

Not to worry, we are not jumping straight to December (as the previous sentence may sound like), but we are so happy to have events coming up that we can't wait to share them with you!

You can also find information about supporting refugees and about the UK Green Film Festival, which screens documentaries examining the climate crisis to raise awareness of this matter while the COP26 summit is on.

If you are looking for a part-time job and speak Swedish, take a look at the bottom of the letter for a job posting!

Ice Skating

Join us to try out your skating skills at the famous Natural History Museum Ice Rink. This is the last year of the rink, so don't miss your chance! Don't worry if your skills are a bit rusty, we are there to support each other (or fall together). Grab your mittens and join us for a nice outdoorsy evening!

Tell us if you're interested by joining the Facebook event. We'll see you next week!

Camden - London
When you can!

Support Camden’s Afghan Crisis Response

Many of you may be looking for ways to support refugees arriving in London from Afghanistan. Through Camden Council, here are a few ways you can help (even from around the world!).

At the moment, most newly arrived Afghan Nationals are in hotels managed by central Government – either in quarantine or in hotels where their housing and wider support needs are being assessed. Donations, volunteers and interpreters are needed to help.

You can donate through the Amazon Wish List. Hubs for in-person donations for will be updated on the Camden Council website. You can also contribute t the Hopsotch Women's Centre Fund or the Little Village Crisis Fund (for 0-5 year olds)

You an offer your time to volunteer through Time to Spare and if you speak any Afghan languages - Dari (Farsi) and Pashto, please contact the council directly to offer help interpreting.

Links for all of these options can be found below.

Holiday event

We are getting prepared for the Holiday season with our second event in November. This event is made of good food (you are encouraged to bring your favourite holiday snacks), good atmosphere and great company. This event takes place in the beautiful Norwegian Church (1 St. Olav's Square, Albion Street, Rotherhithe). Save the date and invite your friends, too!

More information about this event will be on the next newsletter, so stay tuned!

Rio Cinema, Dalston
November 6 to November 13

UK Green Film Festival

The UK Green Film Festival arrives in cinemas across the country this November to coincide with the crucial COP26 summit in Glasgow. Dalston’s Rio Cinema will be hosting the London screenings of five urgent documentaries examining the climate crisis and major environmental issues facing humanity. These include Jim Rakete’s ‘Now’, a feature about the actions young climate activists like Greta Thunberg and Vic Barrett are taking to be heard by their elders, and ‘Nuclear Forever’ by German director Carsten Rau, which explores some of the horror stories behind Germany’s decision to divest from nuclear power. It promises to be compelling, powerful stuff.
