July/August Issue #36

The Thanet St Planet

What's happening at the 'virtual' ILSC and around London
For those working on dissertations and final essays:

A PRAYER BEFORE WRITING

God Above All Things,

In these moments while the document loads and my fingers rest on the keyboard grant me first an emptiness. Remove the to-do list that waits impatiently in the corner of my mind.

Quiet the voice saying, “You’re not ready, you’re not good enough, you don’t have anything to say.”

Shield me from the imagined judgmental gaze of my advisor.

Grant me first an emptiness, an openness, a mind unchained by anxiety.

Grant me then a fullness. Where insecurity lurks, pour out confidence and curiosity.

Where there is fatigue, fill me with generosity and energy. Where there is fear, fill me with courage.

Shelter me in your strength and quiet the world around me.

For these few hours grant me peace and solitude in my thoughts.

Bless this mind you’ve given and help me use it fully. Help me seek and push the limits of my abilities.

Remind me that I have read enough, I have enough, I am enough, and with time this paper will come to a place where it, too, is enough (at least for now).

In Your name I pray, Amen.

Month of July/ Early August

ILSC Book Club

This month we're reading Shame by Salman Rushdie. Written in the style of magic realism, this book portrays the lives of Iskander Harappa and General Raza Hyder and their relationship. The central theme of the novel is that begetting "shame" begets violence. The concepts of 'shame' and 'shamelessness' are explored through all of the characters. We'll meet on 11 August to share our impressions.
Or if you're looking to rediscover London as a way to restart your mind, you can start with the back catalogue of Londonist videos and quizzes!

August: a time for rest?

For many, August may be the time for summer holidays but there's also a large group of our community who are working on final projects or dissertations. But in the midst of our work, we're reminded of the importance of rest. If you need this reminder - check out the Nap Ministry and become reacquainted with the liberating power of naps!

We need a new name!

Our newsletter has had the name Thanet St Planet based on our physical presence at 30 Thanet St. Now that we are no longer based there (but will end up at 10 Sandwich Street!), what should be the new name of this newsletter? Send in ideas using the link below!
