First Presby members Laura Ceperly and Candy Strader accompanied Barb Koster to the American Heart Association to donate 45 baby hats as part of their "little hats, big hearts" campaign to inspire the babies' moms to live heart healthy lives. Thanks to the knitters/crocheters at First Presby, as well as a few Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans and others. We would also like to thank the Discovery Sunday school class for blessing these hats last Sunday. What a fun and generous way to share talents from God!
Congratulations to Kathy Bruner on the birth of her grandson, Luke Jaxson Bruner. Proud parents are Bryana and Stephen Bruner.

Sympathy of the congregation is extended to the families of:
-Todd Mays, friend of Fred Gaul
-Sue Harris Moses, mother of Bob Moses

The annual Souper Bowl of Caring is this Sunday! The youth will collect donations of soup, crackers and monetary donations at the entrances to the sanctuary before and after worship. Regardless of which team wins, everyone is a winner when we work together to help those in need!
Youth Group: There will be no evening youth group due to the Super Bowl. Instead Payne invites all youth and their families to join him for a lunch of soup and sandwiches in the Dining Room immediately following Worship.

You will gain a new insight into the behavioral and cognitive changes that often accompany aging and how it affects us at the cellular, neural and behavioral levels while learning strategies to help keep your mind and brain sharp and healthy as you grow older. The course will be held on Sundays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Dining Room from February 18-May 13. The Bible study will take place on at Edgewood Summit and First Presby on Thursdays between Ash Wednesday and Easter (February 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22). All are welcome!

Relating the gospel events to the world we live in today, The Jesus I Never Knew gives a moving and refreshing portrait of the central figure of history. Help Wanted: First Presby is looking to hire a part-time cook/hostess or host. Kim Moles is planning to retire this spring, and we would like to hire a replacement to train alongside her in the near future. The person should be experienced in large group meal planning, purchasing and preparation. The person should be willing to work in a Christian team setting and be available for Wednesday dinners (including Tuesday planning/shopping,) monthly day-time luncheons and occasional weekend events. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact the church office for an application.
Open Chapel: During Lent, we open our chapel for all to come and draw closer with the Lord. With the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, it’s easy to get wrapped up in our daily routine and put our time with God on the back burner. Sometimes it’s hard to focus with the noise of the world around us. We invite you to utilize the tranquility of our chapel to reflect, meditate and talk with God.
Valentine’s Day Baskets: Are you looking for that perfect gift for your sweetie this Valentine’s Day? Give them their very own custom made gift basket full of chocolate, coffee, tea and other goodies from our Equal Exchange Presbyterian Coffee Project! Proceeds benefit the Equal Exchange farmers and other missions of our church. Gift baskets ($10 minimum) may be ordered through Linda Elliot at 304-344-2075 or

Amazon Smile: Planning on doing some online shopping for your significant other this Valentine's Day? Go to, sign in, select First Presbyterian Church Charleston as your charity of choice and Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase to First Presby!
Bad weather policy for activities: If Kanawha County Schools are closed due to weather, all meetings and activities in the church are cancelled. If public schools close early due to weather, all meetings and activities in the church are cancelled for that evening.  Please do not come out if it puts you at risk for injury. Worship services will always be held. Exceptions – If an event or meeting will be held when schools are closed, the participants of that event will be notified by church staff, otherwise please assume the event, meeting or program is canceled.
Passing the Peace: As cold and flu season is upon us, please be aware that friends with depressed immune systems may welcome a greeting of a warm smile, a pat on the shoulder, etc., rather than a handshake. Please be attentive as you share the loving hospitality of Christ’s peace with each other.
More about the music: Below is an excerpt from “Glory to God: A Companion” about Sunday morning’s Hymn of Praise, “Open the Eyes of My Heart:” This text emerged as a sung prayer one day while the author was leading worship. His recollection is that he initially sang it in the plural (“our hearts,” etc.”, but the singular version is what has become popularized. The petition itself is based on the imagery of Ephesians 1:18, which he had been studying and praying over. The second part of the song recalls the vision of Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-5). None of this was planned, so he would not have been able to recover the song if his sound engineer had not been recording the service. That prayer of the moment has found a sympathetic response from many people who understand this song as a prayer for an authentic and transformative encounter with God. In contrast with the religious songs of some other eras, this prayer does not try to bring God down to a human level. Instead, it asks for an experience like Isaiah’s, being present to God “shining in the light of your glory.” For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit a church copy of “Glory to God: A Companion” by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr. M.A., M.Div. Ph.D. in our church library, or look through the copy on the piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.
Many Ways to Support our Ministries: In addition to traditional cash and checks in the offering plate, you can give on our website via your computer or smart phone, through our mobile app "Church Life" (you must first set up a user profile on our website to use the Church Life app.) or by texting 73256 and typing "firstpresby" in the message line. Use the QR code card in your pew rack to go directly to our giving page. God loves a Cheerful Giver!
There’s an app for that!  Did you know you can access our hymnal from your mobile device using the free mobile edition?  Versions of Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal are available from Google Play and also from the App Store for your Apple device.  The free versions will give you all the public domain hymns, including favorites such as “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling,” “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” and “Take My Life and Let It Be.” In-app purchases will give you copyrighted as well as public domain hymns.  There are powerful search capabilities, sample piano recordings of hymns, interesting information about hymns and their authors, and the ability to access several different versions of hymns including pew, accompaniment, large print, lead sheet, and instrumental (strings, brass, and woodwinds).  Check it out!
Lay Academy continues studying Comparative Religions, this week focusing upon the Baha’i movement, probably the newest World Religion, founded in 1844 in Persia/Iran. Today there are 5 million members who live on every continent. Dr. Acita Misaghi, a native Iranian and member of the local baha’i Assembly in Charleston, will discuss her experience of immigration to the USA and West Virginia in particular. We meet in the Dining Room today from 4:00-5:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to join us to learn and participate in our lively discussions. For more information, please contact Dr. Bob Newman at 304-345-0225 or the Church Office at 304-343-8961.
Trash Bag Pick-up: If you reside in Charleston and have extra trash bags, please donate them to the church. Please note you can bring your Trash Bag Voucher to the church if you can’t use the bags, and we will pick up the bags for the church.  Each year we save over $700 by using your donated bags.
