First Presby's Ash Wednesday Service will take place this Wednesday, February 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel. The ashes that will be used were created this past Wednesday by our children and youth who burned the palm leaves used for last year's Palm Sunday Service. While there is no LOGOS this night, we encourage everyone to participate in this service as we prepare our hearts for the Lenten season and focus our attention toward Christ's ultimate sacrifice for humanity.
The Presbyterian Women's Luncheon will be this Thursday, Feb. 15 at 12:00 p.m. in the Dining Room. The program,The Chautauqua Experience, will be presented by Jackie Lilly, Mary Kay Boyle, Jarve Currence, Linda Elliott, Ann Patterson, and Susan Watkins. The Aging Brain: The Lay Academy will be offering a 12-week lecture series called "The Aging Brain." The courses will be augmented by a panel discussions led by resource professional speakers from our community, including spiritual/theological issues as appropriate. The Aging Brain provides a new understanding of what happens in the brain as we age, and why. You will gain a new insight into the behavioral and cognitive changes that often accompany aging and how it affects us at the cellular, neural and behavioral levels while learning strategies to help keep your mind and brain sharp and healthy as you grow older. The course will be held on Sundays from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Dining Room from February 18-May 13. For more information, contact Dr. Bob Newman at 304-345-0225 or call the Church Office at 304-343-8961.

The theme of the series is “One Another” and focuses on self-sacrifice in order to properly love God and our neighbor the way Jesus commanded. Jesus calls us in these and many other ways to love one another. Join Pastor Christian in a six-week exploration of various “one another” passages from the Bible. The Bible study will take place on at Edgewood Summit and First Presby on Thursdays between Ash Wednesday and Easter (February 15, 22; March 1, 8, 15, 22). All are welcome!
3:00 p.m. at Edgewood Summit in the Multipurpose Room
6:30 p.m. at First Presby in the Ruffner Room
Women's Lenten Growth Group: In The Jesus I Never Knew, Philip Yancey reveals the real Jesus beyond the stereotypes, offering a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work, his teaching, his miracles, his death and resurrection, and ultimately, who he was and why he came. Relating the gospel events to the world we live in today, The Jesus I Never Knew gives a moving and refreshing portrait of the central figure of history. Join Kay Lamb and other women of the church as they dive into a new look into Jesus’ life.

The Soup for the Soul ministry of First Presby has been making and delivering delicious chicken noodle soup for many years.  This ministry is set-up to help care for those who could benefit from a little Tender Loving Care.  The soup is on-hand and available to any church member who would like to make a soup delivery to anyone they think could benefit from it.  Simply stop by the church office to be directed to the soup or it can be accessed in the Pre-school kitchen in the top freezer on Sunday mornings.  Please complete the soup sign-out sheet located to the right of the freezer so that we can monitor the deliveries. A very special “Thank You” goes to Dovie Wahl, Christian Johnson’s mom, for recently making and stocking our freezer with both chicken noodle soup and beef with vegetable soup!  Warming Hearts and Tummies!

Youth Group returns this Sunday, 2/11, at 6:00 p.m. in the Dining Room. All youth from 6th-12th grade are invited to join us for dinner, games and Bible Study.

Help Wanted: First Presby is looking to hire a part-time kitchen manager/cook.  Kim Moles is planning to retire this spring, and we would like to hire a replacement to train alongside her in the near future. The person should be experienced in large group meal planning, purchasing and preparation. The person should be willing to work in a Christian team setting and be available for Wednesday dinners (including Tuesday planning/shopping,) monthly day-time luncheons and occasional weekend events. If you or someone you know may be interested, please contact the church office for an application.
Davis Stuart is looking for pint canning jars for their culinary program. They make pickles, jellies, and other items for use and sale. If you have pint canning jars and have abandoned hope of ever canning again, please bring your pint jars to the church office by February 15 and Sharon Heidt will be sure they get to Davis Stuart.
Open Chapel: During Lent, we open our chapel for all to come and draw closer with the Lord. With the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, it’s easy to get wrapped up in our daily routine and put our time with God on the back burner. Sometimes it’s hard to focus with the noise of the world around us. We invite you to utilize the tranquility of our chapel to reflect, meditate and talk with God.
Valentine’s Day Baskets: Are you looking for that perfect gift for your sweetie this Valentine’s Day? Give them their very own custom made gift basket full of chocolate, coffee, tea and other goodies from our Equal Exchange Presbyterian Coffee Project! Proceeds benefit the Equal Exchange farmers and other missions of our church. Gift baskets ($10 minimum) may be ordered through Linda Elliot at 304-344-2075 or
Attention volleyball players: We have several opportunities for those wanting to play. On Wednesday nights at 7:30 a group is gathering to practice and scrimmage (if we get enough players). The Church League is willing to have a Division 2 women’s league and a Men’s League if there are enough participants. Wednesday nights all you have to do is show up. All skill levels are invited. If you are interested in league play contact Payne Warner at
Amazon Smile: Planning on doing some online shopping for your significant other this Valentine's Day? Go to, sign in, select First Presbyterian Church Charleston as your charity of choice and Amazon will donate 0.5% of your purchase to First Presby!
Passing the Peace: As cold and flu season is upon us, please be aware that friends with depressed immune systems may welcome a greeting of a warm smile, a pat on the shoulder, etc., rather than a handshake. Please be attentive as you share the loving hospitality of Christ’s peace with each other.

More about the music: Below is an excerpt from "Glory to God: A Companion"
about this Sunday's middle hymn, "As the Wind Song:" "This hymn began with
the creation of the tune, which the composer sent to the author with no
suggestion of theme. Her reaction was that 'its lyricism gave a feeling of
the movement of the Spirit, both gentle and powerful.' Just as Jesus used
parables to describe the kingdom of God, the author here gathers a wealth of
similes that are followed by 'so it is with the Spirit of God.' Some of
these images are biblical (like the paraphrase of Romans 8:26 in verse 1)
and some come from daily life (like the kite of 2.5); some are both, like
the rainbow of 2.1." For more tidbits about our music and hymn texts, visit
a church copy of "Glory to God: A Companion" by Reverend Carl P. Daw, Jr.
M.A., M.Div., Ph.D in our church library, or look through the copy on the
piano at the front of the sanctuary after worship.
Lay Academy concludes its current study of “Comparative Religions” this Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018. Dr. Mark Berkson (DVD) reviews what they have learned, especially about the several, if not many, religions we are a part of in the United States. What are the advantages, as well as challenges we share living in our Democracy? He discusses the “Establishment clause” in the US Constitution as well as the “Free Exercise Clause.” How shall we balance freedom of Religion with justice and fairness for all? What are the trends, changes, problems, and opportunities we face, for example in the relation of religion and violence? How does our learning help us and also leave us needing more knowledge? Everyone is welcome to share our studies and participate in our lively discussions.
Trash Bag Pick-up: If you reside in Charleston and have extra trash bags, please donate them to the church. Please note you can bring your Trash Bag Voucher to the church if you can’t use the bags, and we will pick up the bags for the church.  Each year we save over $700 by using your donated bags. Thank you for your contribution!
