From club member Neil Bryant:

"Greg Cushman and I came up with the idea as a fundraiser and fun event. The first roast was in 1979. We selected Sam Johnson. He was retiring as one of representatives in Salem and becoming the mayor of Redmond. He was married to Becky and the president of the S.S. Johnson Foundation. The event was held at the old Juniper Golf Club in Redmond. The club could serve 110 people. We sold 120 tickets thinking 10% would not come.

It was such a success we made it an annual event . Other honorees included COCC president Fred Boyle, Bob Chandler, SOS Norma Paulus. But the biggest roast occurred in 1983. US Senator Bob Packwood accepted our invitation. The Roasters included Gov. Vic Atiyeh, Chief Justice Wally Carson, Bob Chandler, Jack Faust ( host of Town Hall in Portland), Atty Gen. Dave Frohnmeyer, SOS Norma Paulus and Gloria Steinem from NYC. Gloria infiltrated a Playboy club as a bunny and then wrote about it in the New Yorker. She founded and edited MS. magazine and was very pro life. How she agreed to come to Bend is a long story. I don't think she had ever been in Oregon. And Rotary did not allow women members .

We could seat 300 max at the Inn. We sold 320 tickets. They all showed up. What an evening. The last roast as of me as I completed my final year in the Senate. Senator Gordon Smith and Congressman Greg Walden roasted me with several others. My wife Mary protrayed Monica Lewinski."

Volunteer Surge

Cort Vaughn shares: "I just watched a Zone 26/27 Zoom meeting that discussed an amazing Rotary sanctioned volunteer opportunity called Volunteer Surge. It is a free online volunteer training program that trains a person to help with the COVID-19 response. The training only takes 8 - 10 hours, then volunteers are connected to needs in their community. Volunteers are needed for both in person and online roles. For example, after the training a person could volunteer to provide telehealth services. They would take calls, then direct the callers to appropriate services in the community.
