Newsletter of September 2019

A new year, a new team, and some slight changes to the newsletter. Every month our chiefs will give you updates on the progress of their respective subteams. For updates on our activities outside the workshop you can follow us on social media!
New team!
A new academic year means a new team to take on the challenge of building a new electric superbike! This month fifteen enthusiastic students started work on a lighter and more agile bike. Next to a new team working on a new bike, work will continue on the ECLIPSE-GP by members of 2018/19.
Meet the team!
Chassis report
This first month was all about setting out our goals for the year and making the first steps in designing the superbike. In the first weeks we acquired loads of knowledge about anything from motorcycle dynamics to materials used in various parts.
After this initial phase we turned to the layout of the superbike. The layout may be seen as the first major decision of many this year. Using many concepts, real life “black boxes”, actual cardboard boxes and finally 3D models a layout was found. This layout will be the base of our further design.
The various parts of this design have to be designed as well. We spent the last week of the month on exploring the design options for these parts. Next week final designs are planned to be finished. From there on it will be a long design and redesign process leading up to the Technical Presentation the 30th of October.
Powertrain report
The powertrain team this year consists of mainly part timers. Therefore the approach for this year is a bit different than previous years. We will use the designs from previous years and improve those. When those new designs are working perfectly, new innovative designs will be designed and implemented.

The first few weeks mainly consisted of understanding the circuits of the previous team and dividing the hardware (PCB design) and software (programming).
We had an interactive evening with members of the old team where we discussed their design choices and our plan for the upcoming year. Now that we know how the electrical circuits work from last year, we will improve their designs in the upcoming weeks.
