Newsletter of March 2020

It is a hectic and uncertain time these days due to the COVID-19 virus spreading over the world. In these times we have to think about our fellow companions and the people that are most vulnerable.
Of course we follow the rules of the RIVM and therefore started to work from home since March 16. We had to make some sacrifices and be creative with the situation, but everything for the health of our community. We are very determined to make the best of the situation without much delay. We hope everyone pulls through this and stays healthy! - Anne Bulten, team manager

News

This month Electric Superbike Twente turned three years old! Because we couldn't celebrate it together, we all had our own socially distant celebration!
Right at the start of the month we had a nice trip to the south of the Netherlands to two of our partners: Prodrive Technologies and Helukabel. Once there, we got a presentation about the company and a tour around the office which gave the whole team a better understanding of our partners!
For safe assembly of the superbike, we need enough space to walk around. Therefore, together with our colleagues from Green Team Twente, we cleaned up the workspace upstairs and in the garage. It hasn't looked this clean in quite some time!
After the government issued new measures against the spread of COVID-19, all events since have been cancelled and we have started to work from home as much as possible.

Partner highlights

Newframe Animation Studio is once again media partner providing us with amazing graphics and cool animations! We can always count on fantastic results like for example the teaser for the bike reveal which was featured in last month’s newsletter (you can also find it on our website). They also designed the livery for our new bike based on ideas of the team which we are very excited to reveal to you later this year! Thank you Newframe!

A word from our Chief Powertrain

The corona crisis also has an effect on the powertrain team. Luckily, Prodrive is still up and running and producing our PCBs at the moment you read this newsletter. We also try to work from home as much as possible.
Dennis, our wiring harness engineer, makes all the cables in our CAD Solidworks model from home. Niek, our ECU engineer took home all the sensors such that he can test them from home. Lastly, Jeffrey and I are working on the battery pack. Those batteries have to be stored safely in a fire proof casing so we cannot work from home. Even in tough times, we will always try to find solutions to still continue our work.

A word from our Chief Chassis

As you know daily life has changed a lot for all of us in the Netherlands. For us COVID-19 has also brought major changes in the chassis team. We as a team are now working with only a small group at our workshop. We try to avoid working there as much as possible to sustain a quarantine. Nonetheless we are doing everything we can to complete our superbike!
The last few weeks we have started to assemble our electromotor. All of the components for this are as good as ready so our real work will come together soon. It is very exciting to see the work coming together after all of these months designing. Next to this, other components like the frame, swing arm and battery pack frame are going to be welded in the near future as well.
Within the end of April we hope to fully assemble the bike. For us this is the biggest challenge yet. Not only due to how much still has to be done but also because of the recent events.

Partner highlights

Helukabel is one of our new partners of this year! All required cables for the new superbike will be provided by Helukabel. This means everything from data cables to high voltage power cables. Their enormous portfolio and high-quality standards have made us very glad with this partnership. Through our close collaboration acquiring the cables has never been this convenient. Thank you Helukabel!

Deadline new team 2020/21

We are already nearing the deadline for signing up for the team of 2020/21, which is May 1st! Are you, or do you know a student from University of Twente or Hogeschool Saxion interested in joining a student team? Don't forget the sign up deadline of May 1st! For more information or to sign up, go to our website!

Upcoming events

Due to COVID-19 many events have been cancelled, we follow the guidelines of the University of Twente and therefore of the RIVM. All events until June 1st are cancelled which also means our superbike reveal planned for May 15th will not go as planned.
Instead, we will move the superbike reveal online on May 15th so we can smoothly go into the test phase after that. We are currently working on alternative plans so everyone can still see the new superbike up close, we will keep you updated on that as much as possible.

Up until now, no races have been cancelled yet and the race phase is still planned to start at the end of June!
