Big Data Virtual Convention & IDM COP Annual Meeting

2020 has presented the BIG DATA Platform with a unique opportunity to  “walk the talk” on agile, adaptive, digitally-enabled collective action, and this year the Platform's annual convention will be an inclusive, accessible and fully online event.

The event theme, Digital Dynamism for Adaptive Food Systems, will examine food system resilience and highlight how digital tools and technologies can help us sense, respond and (re)build better systems in times of global food security crises. For more information - and to register for free - visit the 2020 Convention page. The Convention agenda is also available.

The Convention is being run on the Whova platform. You can access Whova by:

  1. Registering ASAP for the Convention if you have not already done so – it is free, and easy to do: https://bigdata.cgiar.org/virtual-convention-2020/
  2. Setting up an account and profile on Whova using this URL: https://whova.com/portal/webapp/cpbda_202010/Once you complete your profile, you should be able to see the Convention page, schedule, etc.

Here are some sessions dealing with data and information management that you may find interesting:

IDM CoP update

We now have our CoP page up on the Big Data Platform website. Check it out!  https://bigdata.cgiar.org/communities-of-practice/info-data-mgmt/

There's a nice little cartoon video to describe our CoP on the webpage that we hope you like.

Please also join the CoP's new LinkedIn group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13908647/

IDM CoP annual meeting
The Working Group Chairs voted to schedule our annual meeting after the Convention this year. We have worked together to develop a draft agenda that was shared with you in a recent email. This year's virtual meeting will take place over a 3-hour period on two days: One morning and one afternoon, with the same agenda for both - to accommodate eastern and western time zones.

Thanks to all who have already indicated their prefered timing via this Doodle poll. If you have not, please try to do so ASAP. We will close the poll on Tuesday, Oct 20 and pick the dates that work best for most people.

Open Access, Open Data Policy Review

Thank you for your participation in the OADM Policy review. The Policy has been discussed by the Performance Management Unit of the CGIAR System Organization, and is undergoing further revision to better align it with the new format of CGIAR policies. It will then likely be shared with legal and IP focal points at Centers, and I will also send it to you at that point. The Policy will not be presented to the System Management Board for their November meeting, but will be shared with Board members for virtual comment and approval.

Data Management Maturity Assessment (DMMA)
Many thanks once again for your input to the DMMA. It has been completed, and the final assessment will be shared by the Internal Audit Function of the CGIAR System Organization once it is uploaded for the CGIAR community to view.

Big Data Platform Digital Strategy
The CGIAR Platform for Big Data in Agriculture was tasked by the System Management Board to assist in developing a digital strategy for One CGIAR. A draft strategy has been developed and a slide deck based on it shared with the System Organization for comment. I will share it with you once there is a more final version, but if you're curious about this, come to the Thursday, Oct 22 | 13:55 - 14:50 CEST session on "CGIAR's Management of Data Assets: The Policy and Strategy Environment". One of the speakers is Brian King, and he'll talk a bit about the Strategy. :)

WORKING GROUPS
Working Groups (WGs) are intended to be a forum for cooperation and participation, with members sharing with each other what information, knowledge and expertise they have to help sort issues that are common to benefit all. Your active participation ensures that we move ahead cooperatively and efficiently, so big THANK YOU for your time and dedication!
The Information and Data Management Community of Practice (IDM CoP) includes the Metadata, Repository, Ontology, Open Access, and Globus Working Groups. If you would like to actively participate in those groups, please do not hesitate to request to join.

There are no Working Group updates this time - instead, come to the Wednesday, Oct 21 | 13:35 - 14:20 CEST Convention session to hear your Working Group Chairs present!

Upcoming webinars - stay tuned!

These webinars are intended to facilitate exchange among our members and enhance capacity. Please forward widely as relevant to communities/researchers at your Center.

October 27-28: IDM COP Annual Meeting
