News From Walnut Commons

Welcome to our first newsletter.  We hope to keep you up-to-date on the happenings here at Walnut Commons.  We are an active, caring, multi-generational community, where we welcome members of all backgrounds and lifestyles. We have 19 condominiums and 27 residents. We hope to give you a window on our daily life, and encourage you to stay in touch with all that we do.
What is cohousing?  Cohousing is the ultimate expression of community – people who like each other, share each other's values and want to spend time together.  It’s an easy, comfortable community where decisions are made by consensus among friends. You own your individual condominium unit, and there are spacious shared facilities, including a full kitchen, group dining area, entertainment and recreation rooms, and a view deck on each floor. We each sign up for several activities which typically include cooking, dining, gardening and management of the community.  Openings in our community do become available occasionally. More information about openings and about Walnut Commons is available by writing to us from your email program at: info@walnutcommons.org.  Visit our website at walnutcommons.org.
Recent Events Liv and Chris have been living with us for over a year now as one of our few renters, and are moving this month to Middlebury, Vermont, where Chris will teach physics at the university there. Liv will give birth soon to their first child, and down the road will resume her career as an oceanographer.  This month we had a combined farewell party and baby shower.  What a wonderful asset they have been to Walnut Commons.  What a great time we all had - they will be so missed!
Sandy’s Birthday Cruise Hard to believe, but Sandy won a cruise for 45 of her “closest friends” and invited our whole community to join her. What a day!  We were treated to a two-hour cruise on the Chardonnay II, a majestic sailing ship.  Snacks and beverages were served, and a great time was had by all.

Meals at Walnut Commons: How does it work?  "Breaking bread" together is the bedrock of building our community.  Members have agreed to cook or help cook a meal once a month.  We usually eat together twice a week. Community members pair up or form a small group, plan a menu, then set the table, cook and clean up.  They buy the food, and get reimbursed from the Meals Team.  You sign up in advance to come and eat, then pay about $8 for the meal, usually dinner. If things are slow, and folks haven’t signed up, then the Meals Team will plan a pot luck.

Special Guests at Walnut Commons visit us pretty much every week.  Any member can suggest a gathering and invite a speaker or schedule a video or movie. We like to spend time together! Recently, the Romero Institute came to bring us up to date about the Lakota Peoples’ Law Project. Our honored guest was Chase Iron Eyes, attorney and Native American activist, who helped us understand better the issues at Standing Rock.
Living in Downtown Santa Cruz is a great experience.  We are only two blocks from the lovely Pacific Avenue, the Civic Auditorium is across the street, and the Library only a block away. There are three movie theaters close by, and quality live theater is down the street.  Then there is the ocean, the wharf, and the boardwalk, less than a mile away and very walkable. We would be delighted to provide you with a tour of our facilities, bring you to visit a condominium unit, and show you our spacious common areas, laundry facilities, and guest rooms. Be sure to come to our Open House on October 1st! (See below to RSVP.) Again, to learn more, write to Sandy from your email account at: info@walnutcommons.org
Openings at Walnut Commons –  When a unit becomes available for sale, the owners choose a real estate agent, set up open houses and select among those who offer to purchase the unit. We are a young building, only 3 years old, so inspections and disclosures are pretty routine. Then the owners decide who to sell to. Walnut Commons does not have a voice in this selection. What about the cohousing part?

We make every effort to help prospective buyers learn about our community. We encourage them to attend meetings and to join us for dinners.  We know this process will bring us buyers committed to cohousing, potential members who understand how important it is to participate in our community. We welcome people of all backgrounds and orientations – diversity is important to us.  We all share the responsibility and enjoyment of running this community; some aspects are mundane, most are very pleasant.  We hope for a house full of active members eager to work together to support the community goals we all share.

In late September / early October, there will be a one bedroom unit becoming available.  To help you get to know us better, we will be having an Open House on October 1st from 2 - 4 pm.  There will be a panel discussion with community members and a tour of the building.  RSVP to Sandy from your email account to info@walnutcommons.org.
