News From Walnut Commons

Happy New Year to all our many friends across the country.  We have been having a lovely winter here in Santa Cruz, filled with plenty of rain and abundant sunshine as well.  Santa Cruz generally has  a very balanced weather system in winter. We have had 12 days of rain, and only half were substantial amounts (more than 0.10).

In this newsletter, we would like to share photos of some of our gatherings here at Walnut Commons.  We have quite a variety. Anyone who has an idea for an event is welcome to put one together. Meals are initiated by a member who organizes a small group of cooks. We are quite proud of the opportunities for community-building these events provide.
What is cohousing? It is a type of intentional, self-selected community made up of private homes and shared facilities. Our goals are to provide mutual support, caring and a sense of well-being. The community is planned, owned and managed by the residents. We share activities which typically include occasional cooking, dining, gardening and management of the community.  Openings in our community do become available occasionally. More information about openings and about Walnut Commons is available at: info@walnutcommons.org  A unit for rent is listed below.
Time to decorate our large Christmas tree, this year with live music and a very busy crew!
Our Outreach Team brings in speakers to keep us in touch with our surrounding community; this time we were honored to be visited by Carlos Palacios, Santa Cruz County's Chief Administrative Officer.  He was very helpful and candid in updating us on issues of common concern.
In the Spotlight:   In our Spotlight this issue is our Vice-President, Susan Cavalieri. Susan came to us from the town of Ossining in Westchester County, New York.  She tests our elevator monthly to follow State regulations, works on our landscaping, cooks wonderful meals, keeps track of the composting operation, and solves lots of problems on the Facilities team.  In the community, she is active in all things related to climate change, and spent many hours in November helping to get out the vote.
Unit for Rent at Walnut Commons:  Large, sunny, and lovely 1 bedroom, 1.5 bath unit on the third floor is available to rent at this time. If you are interested please contact Catherine Banghart by email to discuss particulars: ccbanghart@gmail.com
A regular event are our Saturday morning breakfasts, sponsored by Will, who you may remember as Zoe's grandpa and talented ukulele player.  Will pays for all the ingredients, and asks that donations go to our Walnut Commons Wish List fund.
Below are photos of the results of our holiday gathering to make Christmas cookies, organized by Jennie, who lives on the third floor.  She put the event together, and ended up with quite a turnout!
Living in Downtown Santa Cruz is a great experience.  We are only two blocks from lively Pacific Avenue, the Civic Auditorium is across the street, the Library only a block away. There are three movie theaters close by, and quality live theater is down the street.  Then there is the ocean, the wharf, and the boardwalk, less than a mile away and very walkable. We would be delighted to provide you with a tour of our facilities, visit a condominium unit, and see our spacious common areas, laundry facilities, and guest rooms.  Again, to learn more, write to Walnut Commons at: info@walnutcommons.org
Openings at Walnut Commons – What Happens?  When a unit becomes available for sale, the owners usually choose a real estate agent, set up open houses and select among those who offer to purchase the unit. We are a young building, only 4 years old, so inspections and disclosures are pretty routine. Walnut Commons does not have a voice in this selection. What about the cohousing part?

We encourage prospective buyers to visit to get to know us, to see if they would like to join us: come to a business meeting, join us in community meals. We hope that our buyers understand how important it is to participate in our community. We welcome people of all backgrounds and orientations – diversity is important to us.  We all share the fun and responsibility of running this community; some aspects are mundane, most are lots of fun.  We hope for a house full of members eager to work together to support the community goals we all share.
