So much has happened over the last few weeks, and we know that many of you are feeling challenged by these drastic shifts. However, we know that Indiana teachers are innovative, passionate, and dedicated to their students. This is a challenge we can face: one day a time.  

While we are incredibly disappointed that we weren't able to gather with you in March at the University of Notre Dame for a day filled with learning and pedagogical inspiration, we are comforted by the knowledge that the decisions to cancel events and gatherings like these are helping to keep our members (and their students) safe.

Transitioning from face-to-face to virtual teaching is anything but simple, and we hope to be a support to you as you make this shift. Please follow our Facebook page (Indiana Council of Teachers of English) for updates and resources to help you as you continue to adapt your instruction to fit this new virtual landscape. From all of us at ICTE, thank you for your membership, and we wish you continued safety and health.  

Constitutional Amendment Voting Results
and Call for Nominations

With the votes in and counted, the constitutional amendment to change the terms for the president-elect and president positions on the ICTE Executive Committee has passed. The president-elect will serve for one year in that position; the following year, the president-elect will serve for one year as president. Thank you to everyone who participated in the vote to amend the ICTE’s constitution!

With this decision by the membership, we are now soliciting nominations for the president-elect position for AY 2020-2021. As a member of the ICTE Executive Committee, you will play a vital part in shaping the ICTE’s present and future. We are looking for leaders who are interested in being part of our interactive and collaborative team as we work to offer more support, resources, and opportunities for ELA teachers in Indiana and beyond. Share your favorite books with #ICTEreads

ICTE is pleased to continue our #ICTEreads initiative. Each month, we’ll post on Facebook and Twitter asking members to share their favorite books relating to a theme. You are welcome to respond throughout the month and as many times as you would like. Think of it as a way to share and hear book talks with educators across the state.

For April's #ICTEreads, let's celebrate our love of poetry in honor of National Poetry Month! Please share your favorite poem or collection of poetry. Please include #ICTEreads in your response!

Apply for the 2020 NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award
ICTE is now accepting nominations for the NCTE High School Teacher of Excellence Award. This award recognizes and celebrates a high school classroom teacher who shows zeal and innovation towards ELA, their students, and/or to the communities they serve. The ICTE Executive Committee will choose a recipient from all applications based upon these criteria, and the recipient will be recognized with a certificate at the Secondary Section Luncheon during the 2020 NCTE Annual Convention in November. The application, which includes a resume and two short letters of recommendation, is due April 24.

A Professional Development Opportunity:
Climate Education
Climate Generation is a nationally recognized organization that has provided interdisciplinary climate change education training and resources for over 15 years. In partnership with Hamline University, they are offering a professional development opportunity: the Summer Institute for Climate Change Education. Educators from all backgrounds and subjects are invited to attend and learn new tools, skills, and resources to teach about climate change. This year, they are highlighting resources for teaching climate change in science, ELA, and social studies.

The Summer Institute will occur this summer, pending an in-person or virtual format as necessary. Because of COVID-19, Climate Generation staff will re-assess whether the Institute will be moved to virtual the week of May 11, with an expected announcement of our decision on May 20.
