Need Book Recommendations?
ICTE Leaders Offer Their Suggestions

It's a very "different" fall, and we know that you are facing a myriad of challenges. But we also know that you are adapting, continuing to learn, and finding new ways to reach and educate your students. In the two videos below, ICTE leaders Michael Macaluso and Jeff Spanke offer words of thanks and encouragement for all you are doing for the profession and your students. Michael and Jeff also offer suggestions of books that deserve a place in your homes and classroom libraries.
ICTE President Michael Macaluso offers three great book suggestions that ICTE members and their students can enjoy. Make sure to add Front Desk, Darius the Great is Not Okay, and Dig to your "must read" list.
This "October Greeting," created by ICTE President-Elect Jeff Spanke offers this book suggestion for ICTE members and their students. Unflattening is a profound, nontraditional text that will resonate with all readers.
Our newsletter team would like to feature our incredible members in future newsletters. We would like to feature your great tips, techniques, ideas, assignments, favorite apps, or anything else that may be helpful to teachers. You could share your ideas through a short video (2-3 minutes) or in a short narrative (2-3 paragraphs). Photographs could also be submitted, if useful. If interested in contributing to this feature, please email newsletter editor Jennifer Swisher-Carroll at indianaenglishteachers@gmail.com.

Share your favorite books with #ICTEreads

October's #ICTEreads focuses on celebrating today's holiday: National Day on Writing. Through your social media account, we invite you to share your favorite books on writing. As always, don't forget to include #ICTEreads in your response.

Indiana Department of Education Update

The most recent edition of IDOE's newsletter is available here. It includes resources for educators who are interested in discussing the importance of voting in their classrooms, a link to a survey concerning literacy in Indiana, and information about upcoming professional development opportunities.

NCTE News

NCTE member Chris Hass is a member of the NCTE Standing Committee on Literacy Assessment. In "Placing Assessment on the November Ballot," Hass reminds teachers of the importance of advocacy. He argues, "Only when we advocate for the future of our profession, with both our vote and our voice, will we bring about needed change."

October is National Latinx Heritage Month, and in order to celebrate, NCTE compiled a list of books and resources, written by leading Latinx authors and voices, for ELA teachers. Check out some of the suggestions in this blog post
