This week’s wine is SabeoAlbariño from Spain. The Albariño grape is native to the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. In Spain, the grape most commonly grows in the north in vineyards on land that benefits from the cooling breezes of the Atlantic Ocean. In the main Albariño region of Rías Baixas, where this 100% Albariño white wine calls home, the grapes take on a slight saline character from the ocean breezes that by now you’re imagining yourself wrapped in while sipping a glass of Albariño.
If envisioning a lovely afternoon in coastal Spain isn’t enough, the colorful bird art on the bottle will keep you intrigued. And surely you’ll be hooked after pouring a glass.
The nose presents itself as a bouquet of aromatic herbs with a pinch of salt, making it a super interesting and approachable white wine. The pale straw body is dense but harbors a picnic basket of honeydew melon, lemon zest, and citrus flavors. Basically, it’s delicious.
Albariño like this one pair perfectly with seafood, chicken, and cheeses. And for vegetarians, a glass of Sabeo Albariño would do well with a tofu dinner. If possible, I suggest doing these pairings at a seaside restaurant in northern Spain. But NOVA works, too!
