What's at Stake in the Supreme Court's
Upcoming  Argument 

on the “Independent State Legislature" Theory

Moore v. Harper, scheduled for argument December 7, focuses on the “independent state legislature" theory (ISLT). If adopted, it would give state legislatures nearly unrestricted authority to set their own rules for federal elections. Checks and balances are an essential part of keeping power in the hands of the people rather than politicians. Learn why LWVUS is imploring the Court to reject the ISLT and rule in favor of voters.

Stay Informed About Developments in the Sheriff’s Office

As of January 3 Alameda County will have a new sheriff, Yesenia Sanchez. LWVO recently teamed up with the ACLU Northern California and other stakeholders for a Town Hall meeting to discuss with Sheriff-elect Sanchez how we can support efforts to develop a dashboard of jail indicators and outcomes, and stay in touch over the next months.

Roe v. Wade and Beyond

Watch the Nov. 3 panel discussion including Stacy Cross, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, and Nakia Woods, Project Director for California Coalition for Reproductive Freedom. The Alameda County Council of Leagues hosted this discussion on the impact of the Dobbs decision, what people should do and watch for now that reproductive rights are no longer federally protected.
