Reminder: Student and Provisional Applicants

Preceptors are reminded that student and provisional applicants, completing practice experience requirements either as part of an educational program or post-graduate practice experience, or unstructured practice experience must be registered with the PEI College of Pharmacy before commencing their practice experience.   Registration requirements include additional documentation in addition to a preceptor/site approval form.

Preceptors and employers can verify a student or provisional registrant's status on the PEI College of Pharmacy website under Find a Registrant button on the home page.

Health Canada Controlled Substance Resources

Health Canada has developed a landing page to provide a comprehensive reference directory. This resource provides a one-stop listing of compliance and monitoring resources for parties regulated under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and its associated regulations as well as section 56 exemption holders. Information is organized per regulated party including

  • licensed dealers,
  • pharmacists,
  • practitioners,
  • law enforcement,
  • class exemptees, and
  • importers of designated devices.

The pharmacists section contains links to valuable resources including policy documents, the loss or theft reporting portal, Section 56(1) exemption information for pharmacists prescribing controlled substances, and a new quick reference guide for pharmacists dispensing and purchasing controlled substances. This quick reference guide includes the following information for various types of controlled substances:

  • prescription and dispensing requirements,
  • how the section 56(1) exemption applies, and
  • requirements for purchase records.

Temporary Suspension of the Provisional Registration Pathway for Internationally Trained Pharmacists

The PEI College of Pharmacy shared, in a recent publication of the Island Capsule (Edition 8, Volume 7), information regarding the temporary suspension of the Provisional Registration Pathway for internationally trained pharmacists effective May 27, 2022 until April 1, 2023.

Since the announcement, there has been an increase in interest in registration through the existing pathway which is driving requests for preceptors to oversee the 700 hour practice experience requirement.  Potential preceptors should be aware that an applicant must present a preceptor/site approval form with their application on or before May 27, 2022. However, their practice experience may be scheduled to begin after May 27, 2022 but must be completed, along with the 1 week assessment, before April 1, 2023.

Should potential preceptors have any questions, please contact the PEICP office.
