City Manager Search: Your Feedback Wanted!

Doraville residents have two ways to participate in the search for a new city manager.

Colin Baenziger & Associates, the firm assisting the City Council in the hiring process, will conduct a town hall to receive input about the search. The meeting will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in the council chambers at City Hall.

Also, if you have not yet participated in the search firm's short, six-question survey of residents, click here. The City values your opinion!

Doraville to Develop a Pandemic Preparedness Plan

As the Covid-19 virus begins to spread throughout the US, it seems likely that we are dealing with a health situation that could last for several months.

To that end, I have asked Doraville's city manager to quickly come up with a pandemic preparedness plan that will keep the city operational even if a large portion of its workforce falls ill.

Items I have asked him to consider include identifying critical and customer-facing jobs that must be staffed in person. I've also asked him to look into the city's work-from-home policies to make sure we have a way to allow people to work from home if necessary and practical. We will also be placing hand sanitizers at entry points into all public buildings, as well as posting reminders from the CDC to wash hands, cover coughs, and follow other health protocols.

It is important to remember that this illness can be spread by anyone, that it does not discriminate against particular ethnic groups or regions of the world, and it will only be stopped by following basic steps like frequent hand-washing and refraining from touching one's face. Preparation, and not panic, is our best friend in a situation like this.

The Right Way to Set out Your New Trash Bin

Did you know you should put your garbage can out with the handle facing your house? This will make it more likely the lid doesn't get left open and trash doesn't fall into the street.

You can see why in the video above

Doraville's DDA Approves $100 Million in New Projects at Assembly

Doraville's reconstituted Downtown Development Authority (DDA) approved nearly $100 million in new projects at Assembly - the site of the former GM plant. The new projects include 295 luxury apartment units as well as an Alamo Drafthouse movie theater

Commercial Parking in Residential Neighborhoods

Doraville's council is considering ordinances related to parking for heavy commercial vehicles in residential neighborhoods. This has been an outstanding issue in the city for a number of years, and is frequently a public safety issue, with the big vehicles on either side of the street making it difficult or even impossible for fire trucks to navigate our neighborhoods. Council considered this ordinance in its February work session.

The next step is for council members to provide feedback to the community development department. Once that's received, I expect the Planning Commission to review the draft legislation in April and/or May, and then for this issue to come back to the council by June or July. There will be lots of opportunity throughout this process for public comment, and I encourage people to participate in providing that feedback.

New Art Commission Tasked With Developing a Public Art Ordinance

In February, the city council authorized formation of a new art commission tasked with developing a public art ordinance. The call for applicants will open soon. Reach out to city.clerk@doravillega.us to find out when the new application will be available. I hope that council will vote to appoint the new members of the commission by the May or June meetings.
