Update from Joseph Geierman

Representing YOU on Doraville City Council

On January 22, Councilwoman Koontz organized a commemoration ceremony for Korematsu Day, recognizing the work and life of Japanese American civil rights activist, Fred Korematsu. All council members were present, as well as representatives from CPACS, Asian Americans Advancing Justice Atlanta and the Deputy Consul General of Japan.

Proposing a Resolution for the State Legislature

At our February 4th work session, I will be asking that the council authorize our attorneys to draft a resolution encouraging the state legislature to allow municipalities to maintain rental property registries (the state government currently does not allow this). This would be a first step toward getting our arms around Doraville’s boarding house problem. You can read the item I put together for the packet here.

If you agree with me that this is an important issue, please contact the mayor and other council members to voice your support - our contact info can be found here.

Carey Reynolds & Sequoyah Tree Planting!

On January 19th, people from all over Doraville gathered for a tree planting event at Cary Reynolds Elementary School and Seqoyah Middle School. This was an event that was made possible through a grant from the NFL's Superbowl LIII committee and in partnership with Trees Atlanta and the City of Doraville.

I was able to wrap up the morning with a nature walk along a potential future path of the Peachtree Creek Greenway in Doraville. I love my neighbors and neighborhood. Thank you to everyone who came out!

Georgia Municipal Training & Education

As your elected representative, I feel that I have a responsibility to do more than show up to a couple of council meetings a month. It's important for me to understand how government works;  what programs and grants we can take advantage of; to know my peers in other cities and understand the things they are working on; and to  know our legislators, and to be able to lobby them on behalf of our city.

That's why I attended the Georgia Municipal Association's "Mayors' Day Conference" on the weekend of January 26th. While there, I took a full-day class on municipal finance, attended several briefings about transportation, voting machines, and other state-wide issues. I also spent a morning at the Capitol, meeting our state representatives.

This was a great opportunity, and I believe I will be able to take much of what I learned back to Doraville to help me with the job I do for you.

Congratulations to Shannon Hillard - Voted 2019 Mayor Pro Tem by Council

Rich Hammett has created a new "Taste of Doraville" group to sample various restaurants in the city. You can join this group on Facebook and learn about upcoming outings.

The first one should be February 7 at LanZhou Ramen! It sounds fun, and I hope I see you at an outing soon!
