Recap:  Feedback Session on Northwoods Park Improvements

On April 17th, NANA (The Northwoods Area Neighborhood Association) gave me and Council Member MD Naser time at their Spring meeting to speak about the neighborhood's parks. Specifically, we requested community feedback and direction about 2018 capital investments the city plans to make in Brook and Autumn Park.

The overwhelming consensus was that the city should focus on improving the pavilion at Brook Park - both by increasing its accessibility for mobility-challenged people, as well as making general improvements to the functionality and aesthetics of the space. We have shared this feedback to the city staff who will be implementing these improvements.

Watch the video of the meeting, or read more about it on my Facebook page. You can always email me with your thoughts on what you would like to see in the parks. I am committed to working with residents on this issue.

Recap: Doraville's State of the City Celebration

On Friday, April 20th, Doraville capped Georgia Cities Week off with its annual “State of the City” address and celebration. Every city council member attended, along with many other elected officials from around Dekalb County. Mayor Pittman gave an address that covered many of the city’s achievements over the past year - including details about the new Carver Hills subdivision, construction of Serta Simmons Bedding’s new corporate campus at Assembly, and the plans for a proposed elementary school along New Peachtree Road.

The city closed off Park Avenue, and set up a stage where the band “Rupert’s Orchestra” played contemporary hits and classic favorites. Lots of people came with lawn chairs and danced for several hours. The weather was perfect, and I was proud to be able to take part in such a lovely event.

City Council Meeting: May 7

On Monday, May 7 at 6:30pm - Doraville's City Council will considering a few important issues:
  • A rezoning request that would  replace an existing auto shop (which is zoned for Light-Industrial use -  M1 zoning) with a dry cleaning business (which requires C2 "Commercial" zoning).
  • A request for a Conditional Use Permit for 5660 Buford Highway & 3749 Longmire Way that would allow a church on that property.
  • The second reading of an updated (and greatly improved) ethics ordinance that Council Member Koontz has introduced (with input from all members of council).

If you have strong opinions about any of the items above, please attend the meeting and make comments.  Download the full agenda packet for the May 7 council meeting here

The agenda for May 21 has not yet been posted, but you will be able to view it here when it's available

In the city council’s April 9 work session, we received a few presentations about projects that the city has rolled out, or is rolling out soon. They were Text to 911 (which allows you to use your mobile phone to text “911” if you are in a situation where you cannot make a voice call) and Adopt-A-Spot (in the process of being rolled out this month, it gives residents an official way to beautify city owned property and get support. for their efforts).

Spotlight on Doraville: Snackboxe Bistro

One of the most talked about new restaurants in Metro Atlanta is Snackboxe Bistro – a new fast-casual eatery based in Doraville's Peachtree Pavilion Shopping Center (by Super H Mart). Snackeboxe Bistro serves Laotian street food, and has a variety of selections that will appeal to many palates – including vegan/vegetarian options!

We ate here on a rainy weekend afternoon, and the place was hopping. We got our food quickly and had a great meal. B.J. got pork belly and I got tofu larb. We shared Kho Chee (sticky rice cakes) and saku (dumplings). Everything was very good and it hit the spot. I encourage you to check Snackeboxe Bistro out while you’re out and about. You will be happy you did.
