Update from Joseph Geierman

Representing YOU on Doraville City Council

On April 29th, I went to a Georgia Municipal Association policy meeting to urge the organization to lobby our state legislature to give cities more tools to fight bad landlords. Seen in this photo with State Representative, Rhonda Burnough

GDOT Express Lanes in Doraville

Over the past month, quite a bit of information has come out about the managed toll lanes that Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is planning to build in Doraville. I do not support this effort by the state, and write in depth about these lanes on my blog

GDOT is holding an information and listening session on Tuesday, May 14th at 12pm in Doraville. If you can make it, I encourage you to. Before GDOT tears up our city for this project I want to be sure that they get plenty of feedback from our residents.

If you can't make that time, they will also be holding meetings in other cities, where you can give feedback. You can see information about the Doraville meeting, as well as the other meetings at this link.

Kirkland for Gwinnett

My friend, Kirkland Carden, is running for Gwinnett County Commission. This race is important to Doraville, because we need Gwinnett to have transit-friendly commissioners who will support bringing MARTA into their county.

MARTA is currently unwilling to give up their parking lots in our city (which are a prime spot for future development), but may change its mind if our city is no longer the end of the transit line (the main users of the Doraville station's lot are Gwinnetians who ride transit). Having commissioners in place who support MARTA will help us toward this goal.

Kirkland's having a fundraiser on May 22 from 6-9pm at Epicurean Cafe (3579 W. Lawrenceville ST, Duluth, GA 30096), and wanted me to invite you and any friends you may have who live in Gwinnett. Tickets to the event can be purchased here.

Join me at Doraville's State of the City Address

I'm very excited about this year's State of the City Address, being held tomorrow - Friday, May 3 at Assembly Yards! Our residents will get a chance to get a first look at the autonomous shuttle, and hear about some of the development that is coming our way.

The official program will begin at 6 p.m., followed by live music from The Sundogs, family-friendly outdoor games and more until 10 p.m.

Complimentary food from local food trucks will be available. While guests are welcome to pack their own coolers and alcohol (no glass allowed), complimentary beer and wine also will be served until 9:30 p.m. (or until it’s gone!).

Bring your friends and family! This will be a night you won’t want to miss! Find more information about the event on Facebook!

Council Debating Fleet Vehicles in Office Zones

Most people find zoning discussions boring, but zoning is probably one of the most important functions of cities.

City council is currently debating our Office-Institutional/Office-Warehouse zoning. Both in terms of  whether we should put in place zoning that encourages more office uses (and fewer warehousing ones), and also about how many fleet vehicles we should allow in this type of zoning.

There is currently a lot of debate about this among council members, and I do not know how the vote is going to go (I would like to see fewer warehouse uses and more office ones as well as fewer fleet vehicles). I explained my thoughts on the subject on my blog. I believe that council will be discussing this again in our work session, and we may vote on a final version at our May 20th meeting.

Welcoming Yi Fang Fruit Tea to Doraville

Last month, I had the opportunity to visit another great business on Buford Highway - Yi Fang Fruit Tea. This is a Taiwanese-style tea house that specializes in various kinds of fruit and milk iced teas. I tried two different teas, and they were both excellent.

The tea house is having its official ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, May 12th at 1pm. This would be a great event to come to for a special mother's day treat. I'll be there, as will the mayor and a number of other council members. You can add it to your calendar on Facebook by going to this link.

Yi Fang Fruit Tea is located at 5705 Buford Hwy NE, Doraville, GA 30340
