Interim City Manager

I’m pleased that, in their final meeting of the year, the previous mayor and council selected Chuck Atkinson (who has been on our police force since 1994, and has been acting as interim police chief since the Summer) as the city’s interim city manager.

Chief Atkinson is exceptionally qualified for this role. Not only has he served the city for the last 25 years, but he also has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University and manages the largest department in the city. While in the role, he will be paid only one salary – that of an entry level city manager.

Being in a position to have to hire an interim city manager is never ideal, but I think that Chief Atkinson’s education and experience with the city will serve us well as we look for our next city manager.

Please join me in congratulating Interim City Manager Atkinson!

Council Retreat

There is are a number of things that the new council will need to focus on in 2020. One of my own initiatives is to get together at a council retreat (set for January 11th) where we will set our agenda for the next 6 months.

Some areas of focus will be identified over the course of the meeting; but there are several that we already know and will just need to flesh out, including:

  • Finding and hiring a new city manager.
  • Focusing on any process improvements to make our city government easier to navigate for residents, contractors, developers and others.
  • Identifying any legislation that has been worked on by previous councils, but was never voted on - and deciding whether or not to take action.
  • Looking for cost savings so we can fund new initiatives without raising taxes.

There is a lot of work to do! We do want to hear from you. Please let me know if you have any ideas about things that we should be focusing on over the next six months.
