Colic is a common condition in babies, with 1 in 4 experiencing signs within the first 6 weeks after birth. Some causes of colic include food intolerances or allergies, parental and baby stress, fast or traumatic births, and sensitive and immature infant digestive and nervous systems.
Colic is characterised by excessive crying for no apparent reason which tends to be worse in the later part of the day and is often accompanied by your baby clenching their fists, going red in the face, having a rumbling or windy tummy and bringing their knees up or arching their backs.
Osteopathic treatment on infants has been shown to reduce colic symptoms by reducing stress and restrictions in the skull, at the top of the neck and around the diaphragm and ribcage. Research has also highlighted the importance of looking at how the parents and managing this stress so in addition to osteopathic treatment of the baby, support and advice will also be offered in this area.
