Welcome Back

The summer sun is still sizzling our sidewalks, but that didn’t stop the ringing of the school bells all around West Covina. Now staff, students, and teachers are all well into the swing of things as we start our second month of school for the 2017-2018 school year.

Thanks to the hard work of our facilities team, our schools are starting to get a glimpse of the changes and upgrades we have ahead. This edition of WC BEAT includes an article on Measure ES progress - you’ll find where we are in the designing and development phase. This is only the beginning.

There’s been progress on other fronts as well. I am so proud of the improvements we have made over the past couple of years. So much time, effort, and resources have been placed on district initiatives including the K-3 Reading Initiative, the International Baccalaureate Programme, Dual Language Immersion, and much more. I am excited to report that we are starting to see a return on our investment. Student reading levels are increasing, we have two elementary schools (Orangewood and Cameron) that were fully authorized as IB schools, and the Dual Spanish Language Immersion classes are now TK through the second grade.

This is just a small sample of how we are establishing a college and career culture on our campuses. Stay tuned throughout the year as we highlight all the fantastic initiatives and progress made throughout each issue of the WC BEAT.

On behalf of the School Board and District Administrators, I want to wish you all a very happy new school year!

Sincerely,

Charles D. Hinman, Ed.D.
