Much more comfortable out there on a FAST race course at the Cycletherapy | MiSCA Addison Oaks MTB Race. It was awesome to see the podium crowds out there, too! We couldn't have done it without the tons of volunteers this takes to put on!

Thanks to Bryan Mitchell Photography for capturing this awesome video!

Details for Race #3 at Merrell Trail on 9/19

A machine-built trail that was built specifically with mountain bikers in mind, this trail flows and takes you for a fun ride, while still introducing some technical challenges in the form of roots and rocks. Merrell alternates direction depending on the day, so please plan your pre-rides accordingly. The trail will be in race direction on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday this week (note, we have approval from the land manager to run in race direction on Saturday, September 18th for pre-rides and course setup). Parking and main staging area will be out of Premier Park and the West Michigan Sports complex off of Ten Mile Rd in Rockford.

  • Online race registration closes Thursday, September 16 at 11:59 PM. There is no day-of registration available.
  • All changes must be made by the start of a rider's staging time (listed below by category). This includes purchasing a new plate, changing categories, etc.
  • Number plates and t-shirts will be available for pickup at your team tent if you haven't received them yet.
  • All pre-purchased jerseys, cowbells, stickers, or other (non-t-shirt) merchandise will be available for pickup at the information/registration tent. Limited supply still available - buy yours today!

For riders assigned to a team, your race plate and t-shirts will be given to your coach; please check in with your team prior to the race to receive your plate and shirts. Plates will be reused for the entire series and should be collected by the coach after each race for redistribution at the next race. Replacement plates will be available for an additional $10 fee on race day. Independent riders (no team) can pick up their number plates and t-shirts on race day after 8:00 am at the information/registration tent. Your plate is your plate for the entire year!

1 Child = 1 Race Day Volunteer Needed!

We need your help to ensure race day is safe and runs smoothly. If you have a child racing in the D&D Bicycles 2021 MiSCA Race Series, please sign up to volunteer for a few hours. If every family volunteers just once, we will have plenty of volunteers to fill the year! You can sign up for these important roles via or email us. We also need help with setup on Saturdays!
  • Course Marking and Start/Finish Setup: Hop on a bike or help out near the pits, clearly identifying course direction/boundaries and hazards to avoid. Your help ensures we start the races on time!
  • Parking and Traffic Control: Greet folks as they arrive and direct them to the designated parking areas. Direct traffic for road closures.
  • Timing: We need your help to make sure we get the results right. One volunteer will call out rider plate numbers as they cross the lap/finish line, while the other volunteer types those numbers into our backup manual timing system.
  • Course Marshal: Be right in the heart of racing! Stationary and Roaming Course Marshals are on the course to help ensure that riders stay on course, remain uninjured, and make other park users aware of the race. It's a prime time spectating position. Responsibilities
  • Course Cleanup: Our goal is to "leave no trace" and many hands make light work!

A word about dogs at the races...

Those of us with dogs love them, they are a part of our family, and we like to take them everywhere we go! Some of us that don't have dogs in our families love to see and pet other people's dogs too ("good booooyyyyyyyyy"). With being an outdoor event, dogs have been part of MiSCA races from the very start and we want to preserve this tradition; however, we cannot have dogs out of control at our events. There were multiple reports of incidents with dogs yesterday, including dogs interfering with active racers, dogs fighting with each other, and dogs just generally being aggressive. We're asking that you keep dogs away from the start/laps/finish area where they can easily slip under the tape and onto the course. All dogs must be on a 6' leash - not retractable. Younger kids may not be able to control or react correctly to other dogs they may encounter, so younger kids should not be holding the leash or walking dogs around without an adult.
  • You must remain sufficiently far off the course while spectating to not interfere in any manner with student-athletes actively racing. Penalty: 10-minute penalty or a deduction of 20 team series points for each occurrence
  • We may ask specific families not to bring their dog if it acts aggressively toward others or causes interference.
  • We may not allow dogs at our events if we continue to receive reports of this behavior.

How do Individual Series Standings work?
We're almost halfway into the D&D Bicycles 2021 MiSCA Race Series, so let's review how the series points work. Riders are awarded points after each race, based on their finish place. Points vary depending on category, but 1st place receives the most points (up to 120), 2nd place (up to 117), 3rd place (up to 114) and the trend continues with fewer points awarded for the remaining riders. Students only need to start 3 races to qualify for awards and the overall score is based on a student's top 5 races. Make sure you check your standings to make sure there are no unexpected issues. The leader in each category will be awarded the MiSCA State Championship, with Series awards to the top 3. The current standings do not account for a dropped race so it's very possible for someone to dramatically move up in the rankings at the last race. In the case of a tie at the end of the series, the 1st tie breaker will be who the top rider was the most times in head to head competition among the tied riders. The 2nd tie breaker will be who the top rider was the last time the riders faced each other. You may have noticed we did not break the ties at race #2 and everyone tied for 1st place in the series was awarded with a jersey - we are not planning to break the ties until we do the State Championship awards at race #6, so all riders are welcome to wear the jersey while they remain tied for leader.

What about Team Scoring and Series Points?
Teams are broken down into 5 divisions: High School Scholastic D1, High School Scholastic D2, High School Composite, Middle School Composite, and Elementary Composite. Composite teams are open to all riders, while Scholastic teams only include riders from a single school (with few exceptions). Team points are calculated at each race by totaling the points of the top 6 point-earners from each HS Scholastic D1 team and the top 4 point-earners from all other divisions. Note, teams must include both girls and boys (starting the race) to be eligible for team awards. We create an overall score based on the total of all 6 races and award the State Championship to the top overall team in each division.

Support our Mission!
The Michigan Scholastic Cycling Association (MiSCA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that empowers communities to develop and grow K-12 youth mountain biking programs across the state. We instill confidence by promoting the values of an active lifestyle, healthy competition, and outdoor stewardship and adventure while building life-long friendships in an inclusive environment. MiSCA now serves more than 1,000 kids and 300 coaches throughout the state, with new clubs/teams forming all the time. In the fall, MiSCA holds a professionally-run 6-event youth-only mountain bike race series. We provide coach training and support through a certification program that requires skills clinics, first aid/CPR training, background checks, and more to ensure safe and consistent education is provided to our youth. Additionally, MiSCA has programming focused on getting more girls active in the sport by creating girls-only events where girls feel welcomed and ensuring girls are included equally in all aspects of the organization. Cycling is truly a lifelong sport, and we strive to create a fun environment where everyone can experience the joys of the outdoors.
