How do we show our support for our BIPOC colleagues and community?

Dear Gather,

It’s best practice to lead newsletters with a personal voice (ya’ll know this!), but today I struggle with this.

It feels hollow to share how I feel on this public stage because that isn’t the point. Instead, I’ll share that I have been listening on social media to Black-led organizing efforts and voices, listening to my local Black leaders, and considering how I can show up and amplify in this moment when urgency is fueling the already-important national conversation about structural racism. We are pausing Gather’s regular newsletter format this week to make space, listen and support.

Emma Carew Grovum reminded me of one way I can show up right now, and she offers this question to all of us in the Gather community: How do we show our support for our BIPOC staff and audience/community?”

Emma’s Twitter thread “Things you can say to BIPOC friends/colleagues/teammates/employees that *might* help.” is a great place to begin.

Other (incomplete) resources and readings on my mind:

For those of you looking for resources on covering protests:
I’ll end with Emma’s questions for our community of engaged journalists:
  • “How do we acknowledge the past harm our institutions may have done to these communities …
  • ... while also seeking to improve our relationships with them in this moment and going forward?
  • What role does audience engagement and social media play in building and strengthening those relationships?
  • How can we tell these stories in our communities without being extractive and exploitative?”

I’m sending love to all of you and to the ways you’re showing up for your communities. If there’s specific support you want from me or Gather, or questions on your mind, or resources you want me to share with the Gather community, my Slack DMs and email are open.

Alisha Savson, Gather community manager, on behalf of the Gather Team
