The Online News Association’s pandemic-ready conference starts tomorrow. Are you planning to attend ONA Everywhere throughout the next two weeks? If so, join our #ona20 channel on Slack to share sessions you’re excited for, request notes, offer lessons learned, and connect with each other from home.

The conference is packed with smart ideas as always, so we asked you to share what sessions you’re looking forward to. I’ve compiled your engagement-related suggestions (plus a few extra) in this Google document: ONA20: Gather’s Crowd-sourced Sessions. Check out the full list and add your picks!

We’re also excited to share three Gather-sponsored sessions this year:
Gatherers Mike Denison and Beth O’Malley had a couple of tips for creating your personalized agenda:
  • Focus on where you (or your team) would like to grow
  • Add a couple big-picture or tech sessions
  • Look for the specific tool/software being discussed to see if it’s relevant for you
See you on the Gather Slack and at ONA Everywhere!

Community Updates

The Gather Slack is the thriving hub of our community, where we brainstorm together, ask for and offer advice, and connect with each other. Sign up as a Gather member to join Slack.
  • Encrypted crowdsourcing tools: Do you have any secure / encrypted crowdsourcing tools to recommend? Gatherers want to know.
  • List of journalism podcasts: Want to get your audio nerd on? Gatherer Jenna Spinelle compiled a starter list of journalism-related podcasts - check it out and suggest your additions on Slack.
  • Newsletter-specific awards: A Gatherer asks whether anyone knows of awards for newsletters beyond the Webby awards and the new OJA category. Have one to share?
  • Platforms for events: What platforms do you use to host virtual events? Zoom looms large (of course) but we know there are other platforms out there. Share your favs here. (Also - Martin Pratt recently shared his tips via video chat on StreamYard vs. ReStream vs. Zoom, and here’s a Slack thread that gets into streaming to Facebook Live.)
  • Discord vs. Slack: A Gatherer asks, “Does anyone have strong opinions about Slack vs. Discord for communities like this one?” Have you heard of any interesting media use cases for Discord? Hop over to Slack and join the conversation.
Hot ReadTrump’s Taxes Show Chronic Losses and Years of Income Tax Avoidance" by Russ Buettner, Susanne Craig and Mike McIntire at The New York Times. (This is the Gather community's most-shared story on Twitter this week. Look for other 'hot reads' in Friday's Nuzzel newsletter and in the #reads channel on the Gather Slack.)
