Halfway through the year...

Our team of co-ordinators and subject specialists have focused on empowering learners, teachers and tutors. As a result, our reading and mathematics programmes are impacting on our learners, building self-esteem and confidence.
We welcome Mariana Ambraal as a co-ordinator of the ‘Ready Steady Read Write’ Programme. She will be joining Anthea Wiesie at Kranshoek and Harkerville Primary. Our tutor group is growing and we welcome our new tutors who will be joining our team at Kranshoek Primary.
Gillian Reid, Mathematics teaching specialist, has joined Dianne de Villiers, in facilitating our PLC sessions for Mathematics teachers.
The South African Mathematics Foundation is excited to extend their influence in the Bitou region, affording more learners the opportunity to participate in the national challenge.
We bid farewell to Andre Bouwer, retired principal and director of The Bitou 10 Foundation. His legacy lives on in the hearts of many Bitou learners.

Homage to Andre Bouwer
“Andre Bouwer was an enthusiastic supporter of the foundation's projects and programmes and we could always rely on him to help with almost anything. He facilitated leadership training workshops for school principals, gave motivational talks to children, educators, parents and the community, provided venues for workshops or meetings, provided transport for Bitou school children to participate in our programmes, drove kids to the Science Festival, put up banners for our Showcases, often recruited volunteers from his school to help with projects and he always helped with fundraising events.” – Kim Weyer, former CEO of Bitou10 Foundation
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we bid farewell to one of the great citizens of Bitou, Andre Bouwer. Andre’s tragic death in an accident on 23 May 2019 came as a great shock to many people in the Bitou area.

South African Mathematics Challenge 2019
The South African Mathematics Challenge was first initiated as a ‘Mini Math Challenge’ in 1977, by Mona Leeuwenburg, for Grade 7 learners in the Cape Peninsula. With assistance from various teachers centres, the Mathematics Competition extended to other regions - later including other grades in 1986. In 2011, the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) took over the administration of the challenge.
The Bitou 10 Foundation kick started the challenge with Grade 4 learners in the Bitou Region, with the idea of adding a grade each year.
496 Grade 4 learners from Harkerville, Kranshoek, Kwanokuthula and Formosa Primary Schools participated in Round 1 this year. The Challenge consists of two rounds and each paper is an hour long, consisting of 20 multiple choice questions.
