A Message from Dr. Robert K. Ross,

Late last year, I asked many of our TCE partners and friends to complete an online survey reacting to The California Endowment’s new vision statement and providing feedback on our bold ideas. I promised to share results from the survey as soon as they were available—and that day is today!

I hope you enjoy learning what The Endowment heard from all of you and reading more about the progress of our Beyond 2020 transition. Thank you again for everything you do.

Welcome to the Beyond 2020 Transition Newsletter!

Recap: Why Beyond 2020? 

Over the last nine years, The California Endowment has learned a lot from the Building Healthy Communities (BHC) initiative. Most significantly, we learned about the value of people power and the importance of respecting youth and community voices.

As BHC prepares to wind down next year, we are working hard to lift up valuable lessons to guide our strategy and investment going forward.

We call this transition process Beyond 2020, and it relies heavily on the wisdom and advice of partners like you.

This newsletter provides the latest updates about the transition and shares opportunities to provide input. It will be published quarterly, so watch your inbox for Issue #2 in July.  We know you’re busy, so we will keep our newsletter short and informative.

News Update: Survey Results Are In! 

Last December, 1,200 partners completed an online survey sharing feedback about The California Endowment’s new vision statement and the three “Bold Ideas” that will guide our strategy Beyond 2020. 
The Bold Ideas are:
  1. People Power, providing pathways for civic engagement and the raising up of voices of all communities, through youth and adult leadership and action to promote belonging, and change community conditions for better health for all.
  2. Reimagining our Institutions by identifying structural and institutional changes needed to champion equity and support healthy environments and healthy development.
  3. Creating a 21st Century “Health for All” System that prioritizes prevention and promotes community wellness and access to quality health care for all Californians.
We asked for candid feedback, and you didn’t hold back. Thank you!

Here is what we learned:
  • The majority (84%) of respondents believe the vision statement reflects the most important priorities for achieving health equity.
  • A strong majority (91%) supports The Endowment’s commitment to advancing racial equity, racial justice, and racial healing.
  • A similar majority (90+%) believes each bold idea is important to achieving health equity.
  • An even stronger majority (98%) supports a new social contract for California grounded in the belief that a fair and inclusive democracy is critical to our collective progress.
While the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, we also got constructive criticism.
You challenged us to:
  • Be more precise when describing our vision.
  • Name the specific populations and topic areas we will focus on. For example:
    • Housing, land use, mental health, and substance abuse were mentioned frequently as critical issues.
    • Undocumented immigrants and members of the LGBTQQIA+ community were suggested as important organizing partners.
  • Continue to focus on the “upstream” factors that affect health, especially public policy and systems change.
  • Support specific and lasting campaigns to change our state and its communities. “Make it real, not just a sound bite,” urged one respondent. We couldn’t agree more.
Results were not significantly different between grantees and non-grantees, residents of rural communities and urban areas, youth leaders and older Californians, and respondents who identify as people of color and those who do not. That unified support indicates we are on the right track.
We are grateful to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. We will take your comments to heart and dig into these issues more fully as the Beyond 2020 process moves forward.

Coming Soon: In-Depth Strategy Sessions

The year-end survey was the first step in our participatory design process.

This summer, we will host a series of group discussions about the three Bold Ideas and explore important regional priorities. Let us know if you are interested in participating in one of these sessions, and we will include you in our mailing list. Please also let us know if you want to call our attention to an important issue in your community.
