CHILDCARE WORKERS AND VOLUNTEERS: As we begin to open our children’s ministry classrooms, we’ll need some extra hands to make sure we can maintain the social distancing guidelines of having small groups of children with teachers. We have openings for paid childcare workers and for volunteers who would love to be in a rotation of helping lead children to Jesus on Sunday mornings. Contact Krista Peterson for more information, 505-220-3879 or

Dear Upward Basketball Families,

The Covid-19 pandemic has turned the world upside down. We want you to know where we stand with Upward Basketball in 2020. Governor Grisham has cancelled contact sports like football and soccer this fall. However, she left the door open for that to change in time. This makes it hard for us to plan an Upward Basketball season.
If we can have a league, we are delaying everything a couple of months in hopes the situation changes. Registration would not begin until the 2nd of November. Evaluations will be done differently than in the past. Practices would not begin until after January 3rd and games would begin on Saturday, January 23rd for 8 weeks. Our season would run through March 13th in order to be completed before APS Spring Break. Like last year, we will do an Awards Celebration on March 13th in the evening just after the last game of the season! This is our plan, of course, it all depends on circumstances beyond our control.
Please stay tuned. We will keep you posted as things progress. Keep an eye on our Sandia Presbyterian Upward Facebook page and Instagram account! We appreciate our Upward families and really want to host a league this year.

Sincerely, Dr. Doug Hucke

GOD AND THE PANDEMIC: In times of disaster or crisis, Christians have been notoriously prone to jumping to conclusions about the nature and character of God, what he might be doing or saying in all this, and who is at fault for these great and terrible events. Embrace a different approach. In his book God and the Pandemic, biblical scholar N. T. Wright will guide you in how to "keep our reactions within a biblical limit" and to read the events in the world through the light of Jesus and the early Christians. God and the Pandemic will help you to understand how we are to talk about God, how we are to live in the present pandemic, how we recover from it, and what is the church’s calling in the midst of it all. This class is a discussion of this book utilizing the accompanying study guide. Taught by Rev. Jeff Pearson at 10:30–11:30 AM on Sundays, July 19–September 20 on Zoom. Download weekly handouts here:!AtKi5j-3TPltg5IuZoN2MuOtXTCpsw?e=WzCltM. If you would like to watch the recordings of the class sessions, please email Jeff at for the link and password. MARTIN LUTHER ON TRIAL: A Virtual Presentation by the Fellowship for Performing Arts. This free event is happening Sunday, August 2, at 2 PM. Don’t miss this virtual presentation of a fantastical Christian courtroom drama for the soul of the great reformer Martin Luther. Satan has brought charges against Luther, with St. Peter called to the bench. Witnesses include Hitler, M.L. King, Jr., and Pope Francis.  All this along with a thorough examination of Luther’s life and his loving relationship with Katie Von Bora. And did we mention how funny it is? No FPA production in the past 10 years has generated more audience excitement than Martin Luther on Trial. Plus, join with Max McLean for a live talkback following the event! For information and to register for this free event, visit

FAMILY PROMISE: Because of the ongoing pandemic, the homeless families supported by Family Promise continue to be housed at the Church if the Good Shepherd UCC, near Tramway & Paseo. SPC was scheduled to host them August 9-16, so once again we will provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner for that week. At the moment, we know there will be 3 families, with many young children. Please sign up to provide a meal at If you have questions please email or Rachel Caird, whose email address is on the site.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: White Rock Presbyterian Church is working with Nihitaa' Binaanish (Our Father's Business). This is a Navajo-based Christian nonprofit working with Navajo House of Fellowship to provide relief supplies of food and water during this pandemic. It is expected they will be at Roadrunner Food Bank several times this summer to pack literally tons of food and water to take out to the Gallup area. They need 2-4 additional people to pack food boxes onto their trailers. Health guidelines will be followed, just bring your own mask. It is expected to take about 2 hours to pack everything. We will usually get 2-3 days warning before a packing day.  If you are interested in helping pack trailers, please call/text Steve Sobolik at 803-8374 or email him at for more information. If you would like to know more about Nihitaa' Binaanish check out their website,
