Dear Ekone friends,

While the land of Sacred Earth Foundation is the underpinning of all the magic that happens here, it's the PEOPLE who make it sing.

Today we have some big news, invitations, and gratitudes about all the awesome humans of Ekone Ranch (including you).

Announcing our new Program Director,
Michelle Sager!
Our search for new leadership for Ekone's camps and programs has come to a most wonderful conclusion, with our own dear Michelle stepping into Caitlin's shoes at the end of this year.  Michelle brings tremendous people-skills, leadership talent, logistical chops, and three years of deep involvement with Ekone's programs ~ we are so stoked about her YES to this new role!

Caitlin Jones is off to new adventures at the end of the year but promises to visit often.  If you'd like to send her a love note, we'll be showering her with gratitudes in December!

Now Hiring!
The people-puzzle-pieces are shifting all around here at Ekone Ranch, and we're looking for some new folks to join this rad team!
  • Volunteer Coordinator ~ With Michelle changing hats, we'll need someone to take the reins of the robust volunteer program that has grown so much under her leadership!  Click Here for the job posting, and please spread the word. (Applications due December 11.)
  • Program Assistant ~ We'll also be looking for a seasonal, 6-month program assistant to provide support for all of Ekone's summer camps, school field trips, adult and family programs, and ranch events, May-October.  Email michelle@ekone.org if you'd like to receive this job description when it's ready.
  • Development position TBD ~ Just last week we got a YES from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust to fund a new fundraising position for SEF.  Hurrah!  Now we're sorting out the details and expect to be posting this position in January.  Meanwhile, if you're a development professional we should talk to (or you know someone) please do reach out to shonie@ekone.org.
  • Office administrator TBD ~ Ekone is growing, can you tell??  That means that the labor of administration is outgrowing the part-time efforts of Jenna and Shonie (who both need to be focused elsewhere!)  We'll be looking for help in 2023, details tbd, but if you want to be the first to know please email shonie@ekone.org.

Did you know that Ekone staff make a fraction of market-rate wages for similar positions (68-80%, to be specific, based on a 2021 independent compensation review), not accounting for benefits (which we don't currently offer)?

Having just invested $2 million into facilities to ensure this organization has a future, it is now time to turn our attention to ensuring that we can attract and retain the excellent humans that DO the transformative work that takes place here, and fairly compensate them for their dedication and hard work.

Please consider making a gift to help us build this capacity ~ and also to fund all these transitions, which are costly!

(And folks, we aren't doing a big "giving tuesday" blitz or anything.  This is the only ask you'll get from us this month.  Your support would really mean a lot to us!)

Introducing new Board members,
and celebrating completed service
It's also been a big year for board transitions!  We're excited to introduce four fabulous new board members.
  • Usha Noble, Portland, acupuncturist & camp parent
  • Zaakera Stratman, Bainbridge Island, technology program manager & cemetery family
  • Sarah Keefe, Olympia, public health analyst & dedicated workpartier
  • Sandi Scheinberg, nonprofit consultant & camp parent
These four join Victoria DeCillo, Tracy McDaniel, Morgaine Trine, Morgan Houk, Suzanne Wright-Baumhackl, and Valerie Pufahl to provide the vision, accountability, guardrails, and support that this non-profit organization depends on.  Learn more about our awesome board here

We've also had a board chair transition, with Judy Todd passing the torch to Victoria DeCillo in June, after a decade of fearless service on this board and following Therese Charvet as board chair.  Sacred Earth Foundation owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to both Judy and Therese (seriously, y'all, they did some heavy lifting here over 15 years of huge change), and is so lucky to have Victoria stepping in with her characteristic humble willingness and clearsighted heart for this organization.

And finally, great gratitude to these fine folks who have departed the board in recent times, after such heartful service and dedication.
  • Jessenia Eisenman
  • Judy Todd
  • Skye Newkirk
  • Kent Siebold
  • Therese Charvet
  • Tim Southworth
  • Laurie Southworth
Ekone is forever better because of you!

Youth Council invitation
Last year we formed a Youth Council to ensure that the voices and wisdom of Ekone youth are reflected in the organizational structure of Sacred Earth Foundation.  It's been a tremendous success, with excellent learning and reflection all around!  Many thanks to our youth council members:
  • Adela Page-Thompson
  • Evelyn Kent
  • Rumi Johnson
  • Luke Ulrick
  • Ruby Catterson
  • Julia Hess
We're now inviting the next round of applicants to the Youth Council ~ if you are a person aged 16-25 who loves Ekone and would like to have a formal voice in the organization and its various processes, Click Here to learn more and to apply.

Gratitude for YOU, and inviting feedback
Ekone Ranch wouldn't be thriving today without the wide-flung circle of humans who love, support, and participate in this place.  THANK YOU for being one of them.

We'd sure love your input about how we did this year.  Could you spend just a few minutes completing this super-short feedback form about our programs, events, and communications?  It would help us so much!

Wishing you all abundant gratitude, coziness, and full bellies ~
With love from all of us at Ekone Ranch.
