Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library Newsletter

July 2020

From Cathy's Desk
We are now in stage 2 of Ontario’s reopening which means public libraries can provide curbside pickup and computer access by appointment but no in-library access to books or other materials.  Curbside pickup has been very successful and we’re planning to offer computer access by appointment later in July.  We want to ensure the public’s and staff’s safety so are taking a slow and measured approach to reopening.
We continue to enhance our virtual offerings and are very pleased to add a children’s summer reading program.  So far, 126 kids have signed up, surpassing last year’s total registration of 102.  Registration is open until the end of July here:
We’re also offering a virtual computer coding camp this summer.  The Micro:bit Mini Camp teaches kids coding basics with a kit from the library, 3 virtual instructional sessions and extra activities for practice:
These certainly are extraordinary times and while public libraries are not designated “essential services” I think we ARE essential to the health and wellbeing of our community.  I consider us “second responders” providing information and services to combat the far-reaching effects of the pandemic.
As a trusted source of information, we’re uniquely positioned to stop misinformation and update the public about COVID-19.  As curators of educational resources, we’re ready to help parents home schooling and schools with their virtual learning.  We also have in-depth local knowledge and long-standing relationships with people in our community and this is invaluable to the pandemic response.
Thank you for your patience while we safely reopen and stay safe NOTL!
