Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library Newsletter

November 2021

From Laura's Desk

Cathy’s on vacation this week so I’m stepping in for this month’s newsletter.

When people find out what I do for a living, one of the first questions out of their mouths is usually “So, can you recommend a good book?” It may seem like a simple question but strangely enough, it can provoke a high level of anxiety as under pressure my mind draws a blank and I struggle to recall even one book title. Recommending books when you don’t know what the person’s likes and tastes are is difficult. What if I recommend a book that they might hate?  Are they then going to judge me for that choice?  When you know what someone enjoys reading it’s so much easier.  If they say “Hey I really enjoyed Untamed. What other books would I like?”  I can then easily recommend other books in that same genre that they would like.

So far this year the most popular title with Niagara-on-the-Lake’s library community has been 1918 flu-inspired The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue which grimly foreshadows present-day circumstances.   This might sound like it’s right up your street, or you might have had your fill of pandemic-related reads and prefer reading something more uplifting, but you’ve noticed the library doesn’t have it in our collection.  If you’ve ever searched for something in our catalogue and can’t find it, we’d love to hear from you! If we don’t have a book you want to read, you can request that the library buys it.  All you need to do is let us know and we’ll look into purchasing a copy.  You can either complete a
Suggestion for Purchase Form or email me directly with your request.  If we do purchase the item, you also get to be the first to borrow it!

    In October our new neighbours,
Niagara Nursery School, had their official opening ceremony.  We’re enjoying seeing families dropping off their little ones every morning and excited for the future working together with the nursery to provide programming for all Niagara-on-the-Lake families.
This past month has also been extra busy at the library as we underestimated the community’s need for laminated proof of vaccination.  If you still require this documentation, we can help by providing you with a reduced (pocket-sized) laminated version for handy access, staff at the service desk will be happy to help you!
