April 2020 Newsletter

Note from the Executive Director...

Renewal Coalition, like everyone else, has been dealing with many of the issues caused by the COVID-19 crisis.

Since the first isolation order was issued, we have been working from home while making sure our organization runs smoothly. With the safety of our veterans, military families, staff and volunteers being our highest priority, we have suspended all Retreats, VA luncheons and meetings until it has been deemed safe by our governmental authorities to resume activities. We have however, been able to connect via social media, texts and phone calls to stay in touch with many of our service members, their families and our veterans. We will be constantly checking in with our military families to make sure everyone is doing okay.

On March 11, we held the 9th annual Chefs Helping Heroes Fundraiser. It was the most successful Fundraiser yet raising more that $119,000! We are so grateful for all the chefs who volunteered their time, talents and who donated the food. We are also thankful for all of you who attended the event. Please take a moment to read in this newsletter the list of chefs and our sponsors who participated and more importantly, please SUPPORT THEIR RETAURANTS! They are always there to support our program and it is now our time to support them during this difficult time. As always we are blessed to have all of you who make Renewal Coalition possible.

I would like to share a post provided by Angel Faulkner, one of our injured veterans, to bring some perspective to our current situation,

”A lot of folks are wondering why most veterans aren't panicking about COVID-19, well.... the current events have made me realize that my previous life in the military hold a number of similarities....

Never any toilet paper-even if you had it, someone hoarded it.
Lots of canned/packaged food (MRE)
Being told what to do all the time.
Ordered into groups of defined size of groups.
Watching others panic.
Constant instructions which are always changing. Usually, even once it was said it changed before your eyes.
Information which was out of date by the time you received it.
Carrying a face mask at all times.
Your favorite bars are all off limits.
Living under a permanent curfew.
Constant travel restrictions.”

We will keep everyone informed when we are able to continue our normal activities. In the mean time, please stay safe and remember we are all in this together!

January Couples Retreat

Our January retreat was the perfect retreat to begin the new year. We had a wonderful weekend full of beautiful weather and lots of fishing with our 5 Army couples. Our veterans and their spouses enjoyed boating, paddle boarding and walking along our beautiful beaches. Thank you to all of our volunteers, meal hosts, airport drivers and activity hosts for making this an unforgettable weekend for our combat veterans and their spouses. And a big thank you to those who filled our kitchen with snacks, freshly baked goods and treats for our veterans and their spouses to enjoy.

February Retreat

We were honored to host 4 Marine Couples from Wisconsin, Illinois and Florida for our February Couples Retreat. We had a wonderful Valentine’s Day Italian dinner, complete with lots of chocolates and fresh roses! Thank you to all of our volunteers and donors who helped us prepare for this retreat, we could not have created such a warm welcome for our veterans without your support.

As soon as they arrived, this group bonded instantly and spent many nights on the porch enjoying the company of their fellow brethren. Our couples enjoyed a weekend full of boating, fishing and taking quick trips to the beach in between our Florida showers. We want to thank our volunteers, meal hosts, activity hosts and donors who made this retreat a success. This was a note from one of our guests we wanted to share with you all:

“I wanted to say thank you once again for having us down at Renewal Coalition retreat. It was a life changing experience and much needed time laughing and not having to worry about anything. Although that felt foreign we were reassured throughout our stay to just relax and it was a great time with everyone. Huge reminder that we are not forgotten. Thank you all. I look forward to speaking and working with you in the future. You made us feel like family, I appreciate the hospitality.”

We are so honored to meet so many of our nation’s heroes and we look forward to serving more of our military families. Your sacrifice and service to our country will never be forgotten.

Shelter to Service Dog Partnership

We are so excited about the successful collaboration between Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic & Ranch, an organization that identifies dogs best suited to be service dogs and then pays for the training, Renewal Coalition who identifies deserving veterans and pays their expenses including airline tickets, lodging, etc. and Tidal K9 the organization providing the service dog training. The Shelter to Service Dog program has been extremely successful and we are just getting started!

9th Annual Chefs Helping Heroes Fundraiser

On March 11, we held our 9th Annual Chefs Helping Heroes Dinner on the River Fundraiser. Our seven top chefs came together for another year volunteering their time and talents to prepare their specialty dishes for our attendees. We are beyond thankful to our supporters as this event sold out within just a few weeks and we were honored to celebrate the evening with 140 guests, donors and military couples.

The evening kicked off with Jupiter High School ROTC color guard and Sherrie Facchine’s live performance of the National Anthem. It was followed by the most incredible dinner overlooking the water. The evening was filled with dancing, a lively live auction, our Big Ass Raffle and most memorable was our Double Dose of Good. Many thanks to all those who helped us raise over $119,000 to provide fully paid retreats in Florida for post 9/11 injured and ill service members and their families.

We would not have been able to host such a wonderful evening without our fabulous Chefs who planned the entire night from start to finish. When you walked on our porch you walked onto a Tropical Paradise as the aromas of the freshly prepared food filled the air. The menu of the evening included:
Chef Frank Eucalitto-Café Chardonnay
