Northwest Hope & Healing Family and Friends,

This past month, we elected a new President of our Board of Directors. Those of you who joined us at the fashion show might remember her as she stood up following our Keynote Speaker, Courtney's address - recognized for being the Oncologist who helped to save Courtney's life.

Whether you know her as a doctor, volunteer, lifesaver, or dear friend - or you're just getting to know her for the first time, - we're thrilled to introduce our new Board President, Dr. Tanya Wahl!

We're also excited to share more with you about our upcoming fundraiser, Cork Fork Support. Our
annual wine tasting fundraiser will be at Melrose Market on November 7th - and this year will feature more than just wine! Read on for more details about the fabulous pourers who will be featured at this year's event.

We're also excited to highlight another upcoming fundraiser - a tattoo benefit with Dark Age Tattoo. On October 5th, Dark Age will be hosting a $50 tattoo day fundraiser on October 5th with all of the proceeds going to support Northwest Hope and Healing! Dark Age Tattoo is located at 1205 E. Pike St. #1B Seattle, WA 98122.

We're thrilled to have so many opportunities to celebrate and share our mission with philanthropic businesses in the community. Brave stories shared with us by the employees and patrons of these generous shops alike remind us of the countless lives that have been touched through support of Northwest Hope and Healing.  We're humbled at the thought of all the work there is left to do and know that alongside you, our community, we'll light the path to hope and healing for so many more.

Thank you - we can't wait to see you again soon.

The NWHH Team

A Message from Board President, Dr. Tanya Wahl

Hi, I’m Tanya Wahl, and I’ve recently been elected President of the Board of NWHH, with a two year term ahead of me.

I am a Medical Oncologist at Swedish, practicing at our Issaquah campus. I’ve been in practice for over 16 years now, treating all types of cancer but with a focus on breast and gynecologic cancers in addition to blood cancers. I’m a native of the PNW, born in Portland and moving to Seattle when I was 9. I went to UW for my undergraduate degree, then went to Duke Medical School and then to Stanford University for my Internal Medicine residency. I completed my education by coming home for my Hematology/Oncology fellowship at UW/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Outside of my practice, I have been married for more than 27 years to an amazing man and we have 2 teenage boys who do their best to keep us busy. I love the outdoors and especially masters rowing, which I took up 8 years ago and can’t stay away from despite the shockingly early mornings. I am a voracious reader.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the leadership at NWHH. As an oncologist, I see the financial distress a cancer diagnosis and treatment puts on nearly all of my patients and I am proud of the impact NWHH can make to ease that burden in meaningful ways. It is a well run organization with the vast majority of funds raised going directly to patient assistance. I’m proud of the work we do. We are at a pivotal point in the history of this organization and I am excited to see how we grow in the years ahead.

Dr. Wahl

In this month's volunteer feature, we sit down for a Q&A with Jen Smiley, Co-Chair of our upcoming Cork Fork Support Wine Tasting fundraiser!

How long have you been involved with NWHH?
I attended the Fashion Show in spring of 2016. The women in the fashion show were so courageous and appreciative of NWH&H, I knew I had to get involved.

What got you involved/keeps you involved?
My good friend Jennifer Price was already involved with the fall fundraiser, Cork Fork Support, so I volunteered to help her by co-chairing. I've been co-chairing this event ever since.

What are you most excited about for the future of NWHH? This will be my third year co-chairing the Cork Fork Support fall fundraiser and I think it will be better than ever! We're very lucky to be back at Melrose Market on Thursday, November 7 and we have an even longer list of wonderful wineries, distilleries and breweries joining us for the event. It will be a lot of fun!

What would you tell someone about getting involved in volunteering with us?
This organization helps local women when they are going through a tremendous life challenge. I appreciate that there are organizations like NWH&H who help our local community, especially when they need it most. There are so many ways volunteers can make a positive impact with NWH&H, whether you have a few hours or few weeks to help us. There's no way we could continue to have such fun and successful fundraising events without the help of our volunteer teams.

Is there something you're most proud of in your volunteerism with NWHH? I am grateful to be part of such an impactful organization and I hope we'll have even more attendees at this year's Cork Fork Support.
