Melrose Market

Northwest Hope & Healing Family and Friends,

We're thrilled to share our August Newsletter with you. This month, we are kicking off ticket sales for our Fall Fundraiser - Cork Fork Support! Held annually at Melrose Market in Capitol Hill, this event brings our community together to sip delectable local wines, ciders, and brews, to celebrate the brave patients and amazing team that we work with, and to support creating financial security and a path to healing. Thank you for being a part of this community, and we hope you'll make it out to celebrate with us this November.

Were are also excited to share a little about some of our fabulous volunteers! We are so grateful for our Board members and volunteers who donate their time and talent in service of our mission.

Finally, we want to share a little more about our Healing Basket Program with you! Scroll on to learn more about how they come together, the wonderful companies and donors who support us, and how you can get involved in helping the patients we serve.

Thank you for being a part of all we do!

The NWHH Team

Meet Board Secretary, Lise Thornton!

Lise is employed in the Pharmaceutical industry and has been in the breast cancer arena for 20 years. During her preceptorships with oncologists, she saw first-hand the effects of treatment on patients and knows that the financial difficulties of treatment can be as devastating as the disease itself. Lise has also lost two, very close friends to breast cancer, inspiring her to get more involved in the cause.
Lise was introduced to Northwest Hope and Healing several years ago through Swedish Cancer Institute when she received an invitation to attend Cork Fork Support when it was held at Swedish. She continued to attend the event and then became acquainted with the Executive Director who asked her to volunteer. Lise helped with the Alki Beach 5K run, and with Cork Fork Support, and was invited to formally join NWHH as a member of the board in May of 2017.  Lise currently serves as Board Secretary.  She enjoys her position on the board as she is committed the mission of Northwest Hope and Healing and feels passionate about helping breast and gyn cancer patients.
Lise has also volunteered for Gilda’s Club in the past and has been a volunteer at the Seattle Aquarium for over 25 years.

Taylor Richards is a senior at Mercer Island High School who has been volunteering with Northwest Hope and Healing for almost a year now. She first learned about NWHH when her grandmother received a Healing Basket during her treatment for breast cancer. Her grandmother was touched by the gift, and when it came time for Taylor to select her high school community service project, Taylor jumped at the opportunity to work with NWHH Executive Director, Karyn, to organize a Healing Basket Drive.
Taylor expected to have classmates and friends participate in the drive, but turned out inspiring over 75% of families on Mercer Island to donate to the drive – making the community service project hugely successful in supporting NWHH and spreading awareness about the organization. She felt like she was finally able to give back to her grandma and women in the same situation after feeling like she couldn’t do anything to help at all.
Taylor hopes to continue supporting the work of nonprofits in the future and is very passionate about helping others. She’s looking forward to her senior year and heading to college where she plans to major in Business Administration and Nonprofit Management so she can continue working with others to help them. In her free time, Taylor enjoys spending time with friends and family, hiking, running, traveling, DECA, concerts, and netflix.
When thinking about NWHH, she most looks forward to watching the organization continue to grow tremendously and become an even better-known organization around the Seattle area.
Her advice on volunteering? “I would tell anyone looking at volunteering to absolutely do it! Even if it means getting out of your comfort zone or learning more about an organization that you don't know too much about it is definitely worth it!”
Our signature Healing Basket program is one of our favorite things that we do at Northwest Hope and Healing - but it takes a village to make them happen. Read on to learn more about what goes into every box we share with patients at Swedish Cancer Institute.

Our Mission

Northwest Hope & Healing was founded by Christine Smith in 2000, roughly 2 months after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The mission she envisioned from the beginning is the same today:  to provide financial assistance to women in need who are battling breast and gynecological cancer at the Swedish Cancer Institute.

Our Patient Assistance Fund provides assistance for everyday living expenses such as child care, groceries, reliable transportation, and emergency rent. Our signature “Healing Boxes” are assembled and delivered, at no charge, to women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer at all Swedish Cancer Institute Campuses.

Northwest Hope & Healing is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, EIN 20-0799737.
