By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather,
And autumn's best of cheer.

~ Helen Hunt Jackson, "September"
I'm not quite sure how nearly a year has gone by since my last "monthly" newsletter. After hearing the poet Naomi Shihab Nye speak about excising the word "busy" from her vocabulary, I've tried to do the same. Instead I'll say the last ten months have been very full. Abundant even. After the New Year, I joined the board of the Maine Master Naturalist Program and the Senior Editor team at Literary Mama. And I delved into my book manuscript, finishing a draft at the end of June. The manuscript has spent the summer in the hands of two trusted friends, both of whom have given me excellent feedback. In the next weeks, I'll revise one last time before launching into the next stage—finding a agent. Wish me luck!

Once the manuscript was out of my hands, I spent the summer doing summer things—going to the beach, camping, hiking, canoeing—though not really enough of any of those. I also visited colleges with my oldest son, and spent a lot of time shuttling the other two to and from day camps. I had a few terrific freelance opportunities, including writing an article about Rachel Carson and teaching nature journaling on a sea kayak adventure. The combination of the two just about sums up my dream job.

In a couple of weeks, I'll be teaching a nature journaling workshop at an Appalachian Mountain Club hut. We'll immerse ourselves in writing, observing, and drawing the natural world for three days.  I'd love to have you join me and invite your friends.

Happy autumn dear friends. I don't know if I can commit to visiting with you monthly, not knowing what the next few months will bring—hopefully a book contract, possibly a day job—but I do hope to keep in touch a little more often than I have this year.
