Igniting Wonder

Welcome to the Parent Newsletter for John Knox Christian School (Oakville)

October 11, 2018

Principal's Ponderings

This morning, I attended a breakfast at the school that allowed me to connect with students and parents. It was held for no other reason than to create community. I thoroughly enjoyed myself!
This week’s reflection is about another event in which we will come together. On Friday, November 2 at Le Dome Banquet Hall from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.), we will gather together for an important evening.
The theme of the evening is “The Value of Christian Education.” If you join us, you will hear the gifted Rev. Dr. Joseph Boot speak powerfully about Christian education and its value. You will also receive the 2018 edition of The Journey newsletter, in which many stories of value are shared by a variety of people. You will be encouraged that your children are in the right place. You also may also consider this opportunity to bring your friends who may be wondering about the benefits of Christian education. What a great way to introduce them!
As we reflect on the value of Christian education, we will also have the opportunity to financially support our Bursary Program. As we strive to reach our $60,000 goal, we have the privilege of giving that money to qualified families who need some financial support to afford JKCS tuition payments. We have heard many stories of how families have been blessed through the community’s support.
Watch this week’s video to hear Kim Mrkobrada and me explain some of the details about the event.

So, have you cleared your calendar for November 2, so you can join us? Have you sent us an email stating that you are coming? Please pray with us for a large crowd, an encouraging evening, and much support for the JKCS Bursary Program.
In Christ,
Mr. G. Petrusma

Sound Stewardship Brings Sensational Smiles!

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

As we update our classroom furniture for 21st Century Learning, what do we do with the student desks we no longer need? We recycle of course!

Recently, JKCS donated 40 student desks to our friends at Oak Hill Academy in Ancaster. The desks were put to good use!

Here's what the school had to say about the desks:
George, Bill, and the John Knox School,

A very big Thank You for the desks that you donated to Oak Hill Academy. We are so very thankful for your generosity. Our grade 1/2 students were very excited to find desks in their classroom on Monday morning! Again, thank you for thinking of us and gifting us in the way.

On behalf of the Oak Hills Academy Board,

Vanessa Sikkema

Thank You For Blessing Others!

Our Thanksgiving Food Drive was a wonderful success! So many wonderful items were donated and six heavy boxes of food were delivered to Kerr Street Mission in time for Thanksgiving. Thank you for your generosity. Your contributions were a blessing to Oakville families in need.

Celebrate With Us!

Join us at the annual JKCS Celebration Dinner and Silent Auction on November 2 at Le Dome Banquet Hall.

The evening will feature an inspiring presentation by renowned Christian speaker, Rev. Dr. Joseph Boot. Our theme is The Value of Education.

Spots at the Celebration Dinner are going quickly! Reserve today!

RSVP or Book a Table of Eight by emailing

Silent Auction Baskets

If you have not already contributed an item to your classroom's Silent Auction Basket, tomorrow is the last day to submit your donation!

Tomorrow afternoon, our classroom Silent Auction Baskets will be delivered to volunteers for decorating.

Classrooms where 75%+ of the families have contributed to the Silent Auction Basket will earn a THEME DRESS DAY!

All gift baskets will be up for auction at our Celebration Dinner on November 10. There are lots of themed baskets to choose from: Family Fitness, Baking with the Family, Chocolate, Tea Love, Everything Playdoh, Gift Cards, Movie Night, and more!

Proceeds from the Silent Auction will be donated to the JKCS Bursary Program. Your support allows families who could not otherwise afford Christian Education to attend our school.

Thank you and God Bless!

Meet the Newest Members of the JKCS Team!

Danielle Appleby, Director of Development

My name is Danielle Appleby, and I'm very excited to join the JKCS team as the new Development Director!

I spent the past 8 years in the King's Christian Collegiate main office as the Receptionist and Administrative Assistant.

I live in Toronto with my little family; my husband Andrew and our 2 daughters, Juliette & Emilia. We also have 2 adorable cats named Sugar and Penny.

I enjoy reading, playing outside with my kids, and baking and cooking (I also like sharing!)

I look forward to meeting everyone!

Sandrein Abdel-Shaheid, Student Support Services

Hi, my name is Sandrein Abdel-Shaheid and I am looking forward and very excited to being part of John Knox Christian School team. I have graduated from University of Toronto with a Business Degree, and graduated from Sheridan College with an Early Childhood Education certificate.
I will be working within the Student Support Services. I have a great passion to work with students and to watch them grow and excel within their educational journey! I know that along with the students journey, I will be growing as well in many areas in my life.I strongly believe that our Lord created each student with a unique character and purpose in life and I’m excited to see how the Lord can use me to brighten the lives of the students at John Knox Christian School and to help them reach their academic goals. I am also a proud mom at John Knox Christian School and I have enjoyed seeing my son Dominic grow in endless ways academically and spiritually within the John Knox School community. I enjoy reading, traveling and exploring the world with my husband, son and family.

Diane Kay:
Thank You & God Bless

After 13 years of faithful service to students and staff, we regret to inform you Ms. Diane Kay has resigned her position in our Student Support Services Department.  Her gifts of attention to detail, love and care for students, expert knowledge of behaviour theory, and authentic connection with colleagues will be sorely missed. We wish Diane the Lord's blessing as she enters the next chapter of her life.  It is our hope to invite Ms. Kay to our membership meeting in May to appropriately recognize her work among us.

As a result of her departure last week, personnel from the Student Support Services Department have been reassigned and will provide the needed support to staff and students.
