University is quiet at Christmas, that doesn't mean you can't celebrate with others!

We have one more event!
Thursday 20th December
We’re going to London!

See some of the world famous monuments with a guided tour from our volunteer Julian. We will meet at Guildford Station main entrance at 9:00AM to sort tickets at 9:15AM to get the 9:34AM Train. We will be getting a group save ticket discount which limits the time we have in London but saves a lot of money!

Our tour will take us from London Waterloo, past the London Eye, across the river to the houses of parliament, Downing Street and Horse Guards Parade into St James Park. Depending on time and weather we may have a picnic in the park before heading to Buckingham Palace, walk along The Mall to Trafalgar Square and The National Gallery. If time we will try and include Covent Garden as well.

Due to Group Save Ticket timings we will leave London about 3:45PM and arrive back in Guildford at about 4:30PM. You are then invited to a light dinner and refreshments in a local family home.

The tour will be flexible for people to grab a pack lunch from local shops but be aware that London shops can be expensive, especially if you wait until we are in the park to eat!

Bring some food, good shoes for walking, and warm/waterproof clothes. The National Gallery and Covent Garden are sheltered but most of the morning will be out in the cold!

Email us to let us know you're coming or sign up on our FB event and share it around!

General Information over Christmas
There will be no public transport on Christmas Day (in other words, Tuesday 25th: no trains, no buses, including no underground service in London).
Train and bus services will stop operating much earlier than usual on Monday 24th.  If you are travelling, make sure to check the times of the last trains / buses.
More details about train times, on National Rail’s website.

There will be no Arriva buses around Guildford on 25th or 26th December.  (The linked document shows the planned schedules on the left, with the times of the last buses on 24th and 31st December on the right).  There is an extremely limited bus service on Wednesday 26th and all services run a reduced timetable until 3rd January.
Details about other bus operators, on Surrey County Council’s website.
Some taxis may be operating on Christmas Day, but expect to pay at least double the normal fare.  It is best to book a few days in advance for these (“5s & 6s”: 01483 56 56 56; “GM Cars”: 01483 566 566; “Surrey Cars”: 01483 44 99 99; “Beeline Cars”: 01483 823 232).
Please note that large shops must be closed by law on Christmas Day, and in fact most shops will shut anyway.  (I have not been able to find out if Simply Fresh on campus will be open, but I would not expect it to be).  Please also be aware that due to the bank holidays, opening times of many shops may be different from usual over the Christmas week.
Be aware that Tesco may have unusual opening times over the Christmas week as well. You can keep updated by clicking this link.
Other – Study / Leisure
For the first time ever, the University Library will remain open this Christmas (staffed only by the security team).  Good news if all you want to do is study!
Note that the Surrey Sports Park will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day (1st January), with shorter opening times on some other days.
The Guildford Spectrum Leisure Centre will be open on Christmas Day morning for swimming (10:00 - 12:00) or ice skating 10:30 - 12:00). You can see their timetable here.
Tickets should be booked in advance from the website or by calling 01483 443 333 as there are limited numbers available.
