Increasing the visibility of circus in New Zealand is one of ANZCA’s strategic focuses. One way that this can be achieved is by getting circus into schools. There are many of you around the country who are already doing this (thank you!). ANZCA would like to set up a focus group that includes those who are interested in being involved in this conversation/doing some work to make this happen. Over the next five years, the Ministry of Education is refreshing the national curriculum so it is the perfect time to get involved and take action. If you are interested in being involved in this focus group which will be led by a few of the ANZCA steering committee members, please reach out to us at info@anzca.co.nz and we’ll get the ball rolling!

Some current examples of circus in schools happening around the country are listed below:

  • Danny Syme is teaching aerials and tumbling skills at St Margaret’s College in Christchurch.

  • David Ladderman is teaching clown and devising in high schools via Centrepoint in Palmerston North.

  • Tess Munro Pedreros and Evelyn Coulson are teaching aerial silks and ground based circus to students at Selwyn College under the Creatives in Schools funding scheme.

  • Tania Bracey-Brown and their team from Circus Kumarani have been teaching ground based circus skills at Te Kopuru Primary and Selwyn Park Primary (Dargaville) under the Creatives in Schools funding scheme. The team also regularly teach at Blomfield Special School in Whangārei and Kaitaia through Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa funding and have recently introduced ‘functional juggling’ using juggleboards from Quat Props.

  • Laura Oakley, Katelyn Reed, and Aidin Ralfe are teaching ground based circus skills to students at Newtown School through The Circus Hub (Wellington) under the Creatives in Schools funding scheme.
