Hello GAS-activists,

We believe 2019 will be a powerful year in the fight against gas! Read below about our victories and plans for the year.

MidCat victory!

Have you heard the news? The gas pipeline that was being built between Catalonia and France has been CANCELLED!
After years of local, national and European campaigning, this comes as a huge success and promises a great start of the year. (video below)

The details?
Both the Spanish and French regulators (CRE and CNMC) have officially announced that the pipeline “fails to comply with market needs and lacks sufficient maturity”. They will not support it financially, blocking its progress for the next two years. In other words, the project promoters of MidCat have lost one of the last windows of opportunity to build the pipeline.

The big picture?
This announcement is a game changer for all gas projects in Europe. It showed for the first time the European Commission being critical of gas projects, recognising their inconsistency with green house gas emissions. It also shed a light on divisions within the gas industry, with GRT Gaz (one of the project promoters) publicly stating that there is no need for new gas infrastructure in Europe.

All our respect goes to the incredible local groups in Girona, Barcelona, Perpignan who have been fighting this pipeline with everything they have. People power!

"It always seems impossible until its done" - If we did it for MidCat, we can do it for every single gas project.

LNG – Liquefied Natural Gas

We’re starting an informal network of people fighting LNG terminals around the world, from Japan to Sweden. The purpose is to gather information on LNG, to develop resources together and to coordinate joint activities. To be added, simply drop us a line (naomi@gastivists.org).

LNG in Croatia: The LNG terminal of Krk has a planned 2.5 bcm capacity, but only 0.52 bcm has been leased so far. And by whom?  Two croatian state-owned companies! The Croatian government has announced the project will still go ahead, regardless if it is economically viable.

LNG in France: A staggering 900 activists took action in Paris to denounce the investments of French bank Société Générale in the fossil fuel industry. They demanded that the bank stop supporting fracked gas and withdraw from the Rio Grande LNG project in Texas.

LNG in Mozambique (video below): RINA, an Italian company, has been hired to do the risk and environmental impact assessment of the Mozambique LNG project, led by US company Anadarko. RINA has a dark history of disastrous work - In 2008 RINA awarded a safety certificate to a Pakistani clothing factory, which burnt down three weeks later killing over 200 workers. RINA had never actually entered the building to do the assessment, and is the subject of a complaint to the OECD by the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR). Now, a number of NGOs are calling on the banks and export credit agencies supporting the project not to hire RINA, and are demanding a proper and legitimate risk assessment.
Updates on campaigns

TAP pipeline
The infamous mega pipeline being built in Italy is facing serious challenges. 15 people from the TAP company are currently being investigated by the public prosecutor in Lecce for environmental and administrative violations.

Climate camps
Get your tents ready, this summer we are heading to Portugal, the UK and Germany for mass mobilisations and climate camps on gas! Check out Climaximo, Reclaim The Power and Free The Soil to be kept in the loop.
Special shout out to Free The Soil, which is a European-wide collective targetting gas fertilizers to make the link between agriculture and fossil fuels.

More victories
-Fracking was banned in Florida!
-Because of tremors over 0.5 magnitude, fracking had to be paused in the UK. The UK government refused to relax the regulations around magnitude limits, that the industry was pushing for.
