From the provost

The 2019-20 academic year continues to be a productive one for the Office of the Provost. In addition to our core responsibilities, we have made great strides in moving key university initiatives forward and advancing our goals in student success, faculty success and academic success. What follows are just a few of things we’ve been working on.

Key initiative updates/opportunities

REAL poster session; Opportunity Audit

As part of its effort to encourage communication and collaboration about experiential learning across campus, the Relevant, Experiential and Applied Learning (REAL) initiative in partnership with the Office of Undergraduate Research Opportunities and the Honors College will host an informational poster session and workshop on April 5 at 9 a.m.

In addition, the REAL Opportunity Audit has entered its second phase, with Erin Webster Garrett (assistant vice provost for REAL) meeting personally with each unit to discuss its existing experiential learning activities. This ambitious project will provide a comprehensive look of credit and non-credit based hands-on opportunities happening at VCU.

Department Chair Leadership Series

The final session of the Department Chair Leadership Series is on April 24. This series provides an opportunity for department chairs to network and learn about specific issues and topics relating to higher education and faculty success. The final session of spring semester is titled "How Social Media is Changing Leadership."

Major Maps

President Rao provided well-deserved accolades to the Student Success Unit for their work in the creation and launch of Major Maps, which allow academic advisors, faculty, career advisors, family members, and employers to create individualized plans with each student, geared toward their professional goals, upon graduation. Additional maps are in development.

COACHE Faculty Satisfaction Survey

More than 1,700 full-time VCU faculty have been invited to participate in the COACHE Faculty Satisfaction Survey, a 25-minute, web-based survey designed to determine current job satisfaction compared to faculty at peer institutions. Deadline for completing the COACHE survey is April 7.

Leadership/administrative updates

  • The Office of Planning and Decision Support (OPDS) has changed its name to Institutional Research and Decision Support (IRDS). The new name better represents the team’s role in collecting, analyzing and interpreting data.
  • The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) has moved to the Office of the Provost to more closely align with our focus on student success.
  • A new office directory on our website lists the names and contact information of the leadership in the Office of the Provost and our supporting units. In addition, we’ve added a Who to contact page for frequent visitor requests.
