Movie Pick

Maximilian: Saint of Auschwitz

Arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, a priest comes forward to take the place of a fellow prisoner condemned to die in the starvation bunker. Saint Maximilian Kolbe’s riveting true story comes to life in this powerful one-man film performance, enhanced with chilling WWII documentary footage. The dramatic struggle between good and evil is poignantly accentuated as actor Leonardo Defilippis switches effortlessly between portraying Maximilian and his Nazi persecutors. Through it all we witness his trust in Mary, the Mother of God, permeating his every action.

With its message of standing firm in the face of persecution, Maximilian has special significance for our time.

Suitable for ages 10 and up.

Summer Brain Builders
While kids do need a break from school, this doesn’t mean they need a break from learning. For kids with learning disabilities, it’s critical that they engage in activities year-round to help them retain what they’ve worked so hard to achieve. The Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA) offers some ways to prevent “summer learning loss here.

For additional information and resources for inclusion of persons with diverse abilities, please contact Lynne Chapman at l.chapman@dbqarch.org or 563-556-2580, ext. 246.

Summer Blessing for the Catholic Family

May we make our home a place of relaxation,
joy, love, peace and safety.
May we be generous and considerate,
not thinking only about ourselves,
but helping others to enjoy the blessings of summertime.
Lord God, Creator of all things,
guide our steps and strengthen our hearts
during these months of summer and vacation days.
Grant us refreshment of mind and body.
May we constantly strive to make a meaningful difference
in the lives of our loved ones and in the world around us
as we enjoy the warm days of summertime.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
