EDITOR'S NOTE

From NFT | LA to Miami NFT Week to the Non-Fungible Conference — the past two weeks have seen NFTs and the blockchain dominating the cultural calendar. While these events variously presented hits and misses when it came to platforming the technology, they offered opportunities for active dialoguing about the potential and pitfalls that Web3 represents. Besides spurring the presence of NFTs, they more significantly do the work of educating and engaging the wider public, ensuring an expanded understanding as NFTs hit the mainstream.

THE BIG STORY

What's fueling the NFT conversation

Image: Off-White

LUXURY SAYS YES TO CRYPTOCURRENCY

WHAT HAPPENED: From this week, Off-White’s flagship stores in London, Milan, and Paris will accept a host of cryptocurrencies as payments. Onsite customers have a choice of trading Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Tether, and Binance Coin, with no payment limit after fraud checks. It makes Off-White the latest luxury brand to embrace digital currency, trailing streetwear label Philipp Plein, fashion company CHARLES & KEITH, and watchmaker Hublot in welcoming crypto payments.

WHY IT MATTERS: As Off-White explained in a statement, the move “looks towards the future including Web3 technologies, understanding the needs and desires of its ever-evolving customer base.” And indeed, accepting cryptocurrency, while risky considering the currencies’ volatility, represents the sector’s ongoing push to adapt to the changing behaviors of a digitally savvy audience. Broader still, such a development continues to draw the realms of luxury and crypto closer, with their respective assets (whether limited edition apparel or NFTs) increasingly appealing to a similar and younger class of consumers.

THE NFT DROP TO KNOW

The release shaking up NFT commerce

Image: @FewoWorld on Twitter

ARTWORK: Paint by FEWOCiOUS x FewoWorld

THE LAUNCH:
On April 3, NFT phenom FEWOCiOUS debuted his first generative NFT collection as part of his FewoWorld project. Dubbed Paint, the collection asks buyers to purchase a “Paint Drop,” which can be colored with units of “Paint.” The more paint contained in a paint drop, according to Fewoworld.io, the more holders can unlock in an upcoming Fewoworld.

THE RECEPTION: Since dropping on Nifty Gateway, the collection has traded a total of some $117,000 at an average price of $2,100.

WHY IT MATTERS: As ever, generative art collections continue to appeal greatly to crypto buyers, though with Paint, FEWOCiOUS is establishing the foundation for a lasting brand. From the initial drop, the creator is intending to build out his Canvas rewards program and Fewos, “inhabitants” of the forthcoming Fewoworld, with likely fashion and multimedia offerings on the horizon. “This paint,” as he puts it, “is the building block of everything that is Fewoworld.”

WHAT'S TRENDING

VAYNERSPORTS PASS
For a collection that comes backed by Gary Vaynerchuk, the media entrepreneur behind the respectable VeeFriends project that has chalked up more than $150 million in all-time trading volume, VaynerSports Pass was bound to do gangbusters. Launched by Gary and his brother AJ, these 15,555 NFTs are community and utility-first collectibles, granting owners access to events, exclusive content, and connections to their favorite athletes.

Since dropping on April 5, the release has traded more than $10 million in volume, according to NFT Stats, with its floor price currently holding at around ETH0.38 ($1218.58) on OpenSea. While the Vaynerchuks’ standing does boost the collection’s position, the NFTs’ packaged perks, including access to a members-only Metalink community, lends the project a sense of exclusivity and the collectibles real-world value.
NFTS IN THE NEWS

MASS.BLACK BY PAK
On March 31, celebrated digital artist Pak kickstarted Mass.Black, a month-long NFT project billed as “an unusual treasure hunt.” Very basically, the event invites holders of Pak’s Merge NFTs to compete to claim Matter tokens through a set of criteria. There are apparently 1,409 Matter tokens available, in an activation that brilliantly gamifies NFT acquisition.

THE MIAMI HERALD NFT COLLECTION
Joining the ranks of TIME and The New York Times, the Miami Herald has unveiled its own NFT program. Created in partnership with local galleries and Oolite Arts, the Miami Herald Collection will feature works by local artists, with profits split between the creators and the non-profit Miami Herald Journalism Fund. The sale commences mid-April, with prices for each NFT starting at $50.

KEVIN SMITH’S KILLROY WAS HERE COLLECTION
After years in production, Kevin Smith’s comedy-horror anthology KillRoy Was Here will soon see the light as a generative series of 5,555 NFTs on the Legendao platform. The collectibles will include access to the movie and behind-the-scenes extras, plus exclusive ownership of unique KillRoy artwork, which the filmmaker describes as “YOUR KillRoy to do with whatever you want.”

BULGARI OCTO FINISSIMO ULTRA NFT
Last week, Bulgari unveiled the Octo Finissimo Ultra, its latest uber-luxe and highly limited timepiece, and the world’s thinnest watch. That slim profile, though, houses a laser-engraved QR code, which gives its owner access to an exclusive NFT artwork that also authenticates the timepiece. This marks the luxury brand’s first foray onto the blockchain, but surely not the last.

LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR COUPÉ NFT
As Lamborghini moves to electrify its product line, the sports car manufacturer is ending production of its Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae coupés. But fret not, motor fans: the last Aventador will live long on the blockchain and in the metaverse as a 1/1 NFT with visuals made in collaboration with Krista Kim, Steve Aoki, and [INVNT GROUP], and set for auction on April 19.

ON THE DECKS NFT COLLECTION BY AREA15
On April 22, AREA15, the Las Vegas-based entertainment giant, will mark its entry into the NFT marketplace with its On The Decks collection. Minted on Polygon, the series of virtual playing cards, which feature visual elements associated with the AREA15 brand, will offer its holders exclusive digital ownership as well as passes to the venue.
