Happy August!

Greetings Friends,

For me, summer is a time for new experiences, and paddling around my "neighborhood" of Anna's Bay on the Hood Canal my husband and I recently found a loop route through the idyllic Skokomish River estuary. Above is a small glimpse of us and it.

Yup, I cut off part of my face. I still can't take a decent selfie despite lots of practice. Perhaps I should take a class. And speaking of classes, registration is underway (already) for some that I'm teaching this fall. If you're local, I hope you'll join me.

Need some inspiration for yard work or those menial tasks you've been putting off? I've been listening to audiobooks all summer; they keep me motivated while I weed and clean. Below you'll find 4 of my recent favorites.

Write in the Harbor

I'm happy to be returning to Gig Harbor to lead a workshop on Scene Essentials at Tacoma Community College's annual Write in the Harbor conference on November 1st-2nd.

Scenes are the heart of stories, the vivid events and images that expand time, heighten the senses, and engage a reader in both fiction and nonfiction. In my session, we’ll explore the elements and uses of scene, including dialogue, through discussion and examples, and learn how to apply them in our writing.

Write in the Harbor is geared for writers at all levels, genres and styles. Beginners and more seasoned scribes will find inspiration as well as practical advice, tips and tricks, and the opportunity to forge connections with a local writing community. The Conference includes featured keynote and master class presenter Erica Bauermeister and a slate of workshops for writing and publishing.

The Conference sells out every year and early bird pricing is good through August 14th.

We'll Be Kickin' It in Kingston!

After teaching successful writing and mythology classes this spring, my brother-in-law, Sterling Warner, and I are pleased to return to Kingston's Village Green Community Center in October with Western Washington University's Academy for Lifelong Learning on the Peninsula.

We're both offering 5-week classes on Tuesday evenings in October.

Join me as we delve into Short Story Essentials: If you have stories (imagined or true) clamoring for the page, this class is for you! We’ll explore the essential components of short stories including setting, scene, point of view, characterization and dialogue; practice shaping prose from inspiration to written word; and learn the rules so we can break them. Techniques apply to both fiction and memoir and longer work. New writers welcome.

Or jump into the world of Norse mythology and the tales of King Arthur with Sterling.
