MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Members, it’s been a busy summer on all fronts here at the SIU.
We have made major strides over the past four years, delivering on our mandate to have more jobs for our members. While we are facing some uncertainty in the wake of ongoing Canada-U.S. trade issues, we anticipate a very busy season for our members. This is in part due to our win on the temporary foreign worker program. You can read more on this in my Summer President’s update below.
As many of you know, a contract vote for full time Algoma employees began in August. Results for the vote should be known soon. We thank all members for taking the time to listen to the explanation of the proposed CBA and casting their ballots. As a reminder, if you are aboard a vessel, you will vote on board. Members off work have been sent electronic voting instructions. If you are a full-time employee of Algoma and have not received a ballot, please contact the Union hall to ensure you make your voice heard.
In the very near future we will be presenting members with some updates to the Seafarers Pension Plan. These exciting changes will mean members have more options for investment and more support to plan for retirement no matter what your age. It is the most progressive update to the pension plan in decades and we look forward to sharing it with you. Stay tuned for updates!
Over the past year, we’ve renewed our focus on communicating with members. We revamped our website and social media pages, and gathered your thoughts and opinions through a spring survey. We’ve taken your feedback to heart and want to hear more. I encourage all members to make their voice heard in our newest member survey. The links to access the survey can be found below. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us.
