March 2022 Kent Dems Newsletter
In this newsletter:
Letter from the Editor
Happy March from everyone here at the Kent County Democratic Party!  Since 1980 when President Carter established Women's History Week and six years later when Congress expanded it to include the entire month of March, we take time in our calendar to acknowledge the many and vital contributions that women have made and continue to make to our party and our country. Women's rights and body autonomy unfortunately continue to be under attack and 2022 will likely see continued efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade and other attempts to limit women's ability to make choices about their own bodies.  To that end we need to continue to unequivocally advocate for women's rights and to celebrate how essential women are to our party and our country.

March is a busy month here at the Kent Dems.  We are hosting many club events, many trainings and have lots of volunteer opportunities as we ramp up for this very important November.  If you're considering being involved, please consider throwing your hat in the ring, we would love to have your talents on board!  This year will be an all hands on deck effort not only to stave off a very aggressive and regressive effort by the Republican Party but to further our gains that we made in 2020.  We are also getting ready to celebrate the remarkable progress we have made as a county party at our gala in April.  Kent County is absolutely vital to our state party and they are joining us in a big way and we hope to see you there!
Attend the 2022 Kent County Democratic Party Gala!
Mark your calendars for our biggest fundraiser of the year: the KCDP Gala will take place on April 30 at the Eberhard Center!

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist and other fantastic speakers will motivate us as we prepare for the last six months of the campaign. You'll also enjoy good food, great company, and the knowledge that you are helping Democrats win.

The road to Democratic majorities in Lansing and Washington runs through Kent County. Gala proceeds will help us re-elect Governor Whitmer and other great Democrats, while ensuring that they have a legislature that works with them, not against them.

Hillary Scholten: Running for Congressional District 3
We are excited to report that Hillary Scholten has announced her candidacy for Michigan's 3rd Congressional District! Ms. Scholten was our Democratic nominee in 2020 and ran an exceptional campaign. She has a long history of community advocacy with her work in the U.S. Court of Appeals, the Department of Justice, and as an attorney with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center.

Redistricting has made the 3rd Congressional a much more competitive district.  The district changed from a district President Trump won by 4% to a district which elected President Biden by 8%.  In a critical election year, we need to use our political momentum to flip a seat and elect someone who has a long history of social, environmental and legal advocacy.  Please find more about Ms. Scholten at her website here.
Protect the Vote!
The May special election is coming up on May 3. We need volunteers to serve as Poll Challengers that day and as Early Vote Observers at the clerk's office for early voting. All volunteers will receive training from the MDP Voter Protection team. You can sign-up here.

Poll Challengers serve as our team’s eyes and ears on the ground at polling locations on Election Day. They observe the process and intervene with election officials as needed, to make sure that voters are able to cast a ballot that counts. Our Challengers do NOT challenge voters; rather, they advocate for voters. Poll Challengers must be registered to vote in Michigan and they receive credentials from the MDP.

Early Vote Observers visit clerk’s offices periodically during the Early Voting period (40 days before Election Day) to make sure that absentee ballots are being issued upon request and that all relevant rules are being followed.
