Letter from the Editor
Happy New Year from everyone here at the Kent County Democratic Party! Going into 2022, there is cause for celebration and optimism. The Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Committee finalized our State House, Senate and Congressional maps which created the best attempt Michigan has had within the last 30 years at competitive and equitable maps (more on that later). With President Biden’s record win of more than 80 million votes, Democratic control of the House and Senate and now the historic passing of the Infrastructure bill, there is cause for optimism regarding our economy and social safety net.

Now is not the time to take the foot off of the gas. 2022 needs to be a year of relentless dedication if the gains we have worked so hard to achieve will remain in place for another election cycle.  To that end we must pull out all of the stops in supporting our local candidates as they run for office, support our State Representatives and Senators as they attempt to take advantage of the new maps we have and support our Governor as she attempts to keep science, reason and humanity at the core of our government's decision making.
Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission Results
In response to decades of Republican gerrymandering, a ballot initiative was passed in 2018 that created an independent redistricting commission. This commission's task was to draw maps with as little partisan bias as possible while representing communities of interest and retaining the integrity of majority minority communities protected by the Voting Rights Act.

Yesterday, the MICRC completed its task and adopted new maps for Michigan. We at the Kent Dems want to express our deep appreciation for everyone who took the time to be a part of this process.  Your time and dedication made a difference!  Kent County now has:
  • A more competitive Congressional district
  • An additional State Senate district to compete for
  • 5 State House districts up for grabs, up from 2

The Finance Associate will report directly to the Department Director. For more details and information on how to apply please click here.
Kellogg's Strike Concludes
Our brothers and sisters in Battle Creek and their counterparts across the country have prevailed in a successful strike at Kellogg's.  The new five-year agreement includes no concessions and no take aways from the union, the BCTGM said in a statement, as well as a clear path to regular full-time employment, a moratorium on plant shut downs through Oct. 2026, an increase in the pension multiplier and maintenance of cost of living raises.  Many thanks to those of you who supported the workers in their efforts through your donations, your visits to the line and your boycott of Kellogg's products while the strike was ongoing.  Together we can and will continue to make Michigan a better place for working families to live with dignity.
